left dominate heart

i am a 45 yr old female, about 20lbs over weight, smoker-trying to quit, . about 4 months ago, i noticed my chest was hurting/tight/tingly and my heart rate was rapid. this continued w/out a normal pattern for about 3 months. three weeks ago i was at work, i noticed that i was feeling sharp pain under my left breast, radiating around the chest to the left shoulder blade, over my left shoulder and down the left arm, coupled with a rapid heart rate(135-150) a min, and i was nauseous, shaky, headache, and felt like my breath was being taken away. i have no history of heart problems, and some stress. was rushed to er, EKG was normal, blood work for heart enzymes were normal, but my potassium was a .7, my bp was 180/115, never had a bp problem. they gave me nitro by mouth, it worked for about a hour, the nitro patch worked for about 2 hours,but both times the rapid rate/flopping my heart was doing came back, so they put me on a nitro drip, and admitted me to the hospital.
i had a chemical nuclear stress test, during which my bp dropped extremly low, but other wise it was normal. then they did an angiogram thru the right wrist. had trouble getting the line in my vein, it was very spasmodic , finally got it thru. the exam showed less then 10% calcium deposits in the artery/veins, but it also showed i have a "left dominate" heart. was released from hospital, no meds, etc, but still experiencing alot of chest discomfort, heart "flopping" feeling-daily, which makes me feel the breath was being taken, lots of dizzyness, and headaches. still not sure whats going on, my cholesterol is perfect, have no history of heart disease, in self or family.

Hello and I am sorry to read of your problems.  I would strongly suggest that you follow up with another cardiologist for a second opinion re what is going on with you.  Having someone elses assessment is generally extremely helpful.

I am going to provide you with a very short lesson re the blood vessels of the heart and what determines  coronary artery dominance .

 

The artery that supplies the posterior descending artery determines the coronary dominance.

If the posterior descending artery is supplied by the right coronary artery then the coronary circulation can be classified as "right-dominant".

If the posterior descending artery is supplied by the circumflex artery,a branch of the left artery, then the coronary circulation can be classified as "left-dominant".

If the posterior descending artery is supplied by both the right coronary artery and the circumflex artery, then the coronary circulation can be classified as "co-dominant".

I hope this gives you a brief and simple description of why your Dr. stated that your coronary circulations is "left dominant"
