Judy, i did a lot of reading on Esselstyn and Ornisch (similar except he allows oils, and i think, egg whites and also has a more holistic approach, not just diet but exercise and stress reduction techniques.
I just felt it was unsustainable.
I have gone a different route. I follow Dr William Davis, who authored the best seller Wheat Belly. He has a website, Cureality.com (its subscription, but pretty cheap) which has all the materials you need to read, as well as a fairly active forum.
Anyway, the diet part is opposite of Esselstyn. Davis advocates low carb, high fat (mostly "good fat")
For me, it brought my weight down about 15 pounds (i had alreadyr lost 30 on my own), and my triglycerides, which were always a big problem, from 208, to 85.
It just made sense to me because carbs are a big antagonist in triglycerides. I've elimintated all whet - rice, pasta, bread, farro, quinoa, etc. And i dont limit fats. I do probably eat more saturated fat than i should, but i am working on it.
I have 2 stents, and a heavy plaque load. Is it reducing or stopping growth of plaque? i dont know but its helped my markers tremendously, and i feel better than i ever have in my adult life. LDL is 60, total cholesterol is 83, and as i mentioned , triglycerides 85 . HDL is still low at 30. I am on 10 mg Crestor, so that has somethign to do with the choesterol numbers, but the triglycerides are all diet
I think both approaches can work, everyone is different, for me, i felt Esselstyn, which i seriously considered, was unsustainable. I love food.
