Anyone deal with sudden super high blood pressures?

My BPs were off and on higher than they should be and then back to normal and then I happened to get sick and a few other things happened and my BP shot up high and wouldn't go back down. I ended up being sent from the clinic to the ER with a BP of 200/120 and now I am on a beta blocker which is horrible because I can't sleep and yet am overwhelmingly tired.

I don't know what happened and I don't know if I can get back off these meds someday.

hi, how are ya kidneys? kidneys regulate bp. time for the doc to do some bloods. watch stress and anxiety, as these can spike levels. others will come on, forum slow. cheers.

There are ways of lowering blood pressure naturally. Meditation and yoga can be helpful since it decreases stress. Diet is important since potassium is important in lowering blood pressure. Eat real food not the process foods which don't have the vitamins and minerals necessary for good health. There are herbs which can lower blood pressure(CoQ10, hawthorn,basil,cinnamon, flaxseed, garlic, ginger, celery seed) to name a few. Google information on how to control blood pressure naturally and try different things until you find out what works.

The bloodwork came back good on the kidneys but every morning my urine is an orange color. I am trying to drink more water. I have lots of stress and I don't know how to get that under control. I am currently on a Beta blocker and I hate it very much.

In the span of about 2 weeks they put me on an ace inhibitor and I had a red hot rash with that, then the ER gave me a calcium channel blocker and told me to take hydrochlorothiazide (sp?) and I ended up back in the ER in 2 days with low potassium of 2.9 from 3.6 and tachycardia. They ER Doc put me on the beta blocker and gave me IV potassium and I have been on the beta blocker now for 9 days.

I tried to talk to my Dr. about the effects of it and she said due to the dangerous blood pressures they dont want to take me off the beta blocker. I have burning sensations and am so tired. So she gave me an antihistamine for itching and burning as a solution. It says do not take if you have heart palpitations or low potassium and magnesium so I dont want to take it. She thinks the burning is anxiety and well I do not think so.

I am miserable. OH and my bp is still not great, the bottom number isn't coming down too far. 131/94 right now took my pill an hour ago. It was 113/82 yesterday afternoon which is the lowest it has been since this all happened.

Hi time2reclaim & welcome to Healing Well. You probably are not going to care much for what I am about to say but stay on your medication. Since you have been on it just 9 days the tiredness should go away before long. I was 28 yrs old when I was first dx'd with high blood pressure. Thinking I was too young to have it I was not good about taking that one pill a day. Well, I lost count of how many admissions for a week at a time I would land in the hospital because of the very real potential of having a stroke. Uncontrolled blood pressure is very hard on the heart valves & can cause damage, I am the poster child for that.

Now I am 63 yrs old & had I been smarter when I was younger I wouldn't be in the shape I am now. Have had a heart attack & was very lucky. Recently was admitted to the hospital for several different things going in including out of control blood pressure. The potential of a stroke loomed one more time. I take 3 different blood pressure medications & have for years, recently they were all 3 doubled & yes the tiredness really wore me out but its getting better. And no my dr refuses to put me back on the lower doses.

I have a family history of high blood pressure & both my dad & brother had to have their aortic heart valves replaced because of high blood pressure untreated for many years. I come from the bad gene pool.

I appreciate your sharing. I do understand the dangers, my husband had a heart attack just before his 40th birthday so I am afraid of heart issues. Thankfully he is still here.

I do not like these meds. They started me on lisinopril and that gave me a hot, red rash on my chest. Then they gave me a water pill and I ended up with low potassium in the ER after 2 days, they gave me an CCB and it seemed to be ok but then they put me on the BB. The worst thing here is I am getting itchy and burning especially on my face intermittently and the DR. says she does not want to take me off it due to the danger of the high bp and told me to take antihistimines. This is not a good way to exist. Sleepy, itchy, burning and getting depressed and anxious over the whole deal.

I understand you feeling as you about the medication however, rather than thinking "this is not a good way to exist" its much better than having a stroke. It is real common with lots of different medications to have the reaction you are & the drs say the same thing take an antihistamine until it goes away. What beta-blocker did the dr put you on & what is the dosage.

Now it not the time to let depression & anxiety take hold because that will only open up a door for a host of other things to crop up.

Susie is right. and I know because I live with it. the meds always have a nasty s/e for a bit, sort of confirms to me that they are working. the slippery slope will come upon you, and you can't get off because you are flying fast down on it. it's nasty. I am fighting back.........you don't want this.

I am on metoprolol, 25 mg ER. This evening I am having major burning and itching, it is on my face scalp, ears and top of back. Took a dose of benadryl and it barely touched it.

I am thinking of asking the Dr. if she can switch me to a different bb, maybe Atenolol.

Stayed awake most of the night stressing and called the Dr office this morning. Evidently she is out till next week. The nurse wants me to take and keep benadryl in my system around the clock and see if it helps. I'm not happy about this.

I also take Metoprolol ER 50mg, Diovan HCT 160/25 & Norvasc 10mg. I did go to Drugs.com & looked up the side effects of it & I suggest you do the same. Some of the side effects you are experiencing are considered rare, but nonetheless, I think she needs to switch you to a different beta blocker. Tell the dr you are aware the side effects are rare & you need a change.

However, please continue with it until you can talk to her. I would really think you need to make an appt & go in & see her to discuss this. A lot of times things fall through the cracks especially if the dr has not been in the office for a few days.

I'm sure it's the medicine but the Dr. has the anxiety label on me and doesn't believe the med is doing it. I have another appt for Monday morning but I don't know if I can make it that long, this is not getting any better.

Go to Drugs.com & print off the side effects & take it with you to the appt. Good luck.

I went to another Doc today, I got in.
She wants me to stop the metoprolol and start on ccb's. Amlodipine daily and clonidine when the systolic is over 160. I am almost afraid to start new meds, I have been having so many problems with them all.

Have you had a cardiac work up? If not, then have your GP refer you to a cardiologist for a consult. In the meantime she can try you on something different.

In the ER I had labs, xray and EKG's. In the last year or so I think it has been, I had an ekg, cardio doc saw me and did an echo as well as I had a 30 day event monitor for palps. Evidently they didn't find anything abnormal.

If we can keep my potassium up, maybe I can get them to try the diuretic again.

The ace inhibitor broke me out in a rash, the water pill ended me up in the er with tachy after 2 days, I had a calcium channel blocker in the er on that visit and it gave me a very hot flushed face but long term I don't know what it would do. This beta blocker is making me burn and itch and it is spreading now even though I am taking benadryl for it.

I'm scared and so frustrated. sad
