I've been taking metoprolol for about 6 years now, ever since open heart/valve surgery. I started out at 125 mg/day. I was totally wiped out, but blamed it on the surgical recovery. . . until I started rehab. I felt like I was pulling around a sled full of boulders all day. I negotiated with my cardio and we reduced my dosage down to 50 mg/day. Major improvement, stayed there for another 6 months as I recovered. Finally, at 12 months out from surgery (valve, bypass, pacemaker), I again negotiated a reduction to 25 mg/day, and am there now. I, too, used to push it at the gym, getting my heart rate up to the 160's easily. Today, with the beta blocker, 140 is the max, and that is a LOT of work.
My resting heart rate used to go down to the 40's, before surgery. Now, the pacemaker won't let me go below 60 bpm. Life is still good. No (clinically significant) afib since just after surgery. Life is good.
BTW - Hi, again, Prato and Galileo!
