I went to the ED a while back for flu-like symptoms and fever after a surgery. They admitted me due to elevated troponin levels (243) and tachycardia at rest (118bpm). I had an EKG, echo, and chest xray, but was only told they looked "fine". I was eventually discharged with the one word diagnosis "pericarditis," no meds, and no explanation or plan other than to follow up with mt PCP.
At my follow-up, I was told I had an enlarged heart and decreased ejection fraction, and that we'd "keep an eye on it." Nothing has been mentioned since and there was no elaboration.
Anything more than general getting around has my heart rate shooting up to the 160s and leaves me short of breath and fatigued. I've been having palpitations; my heart skips beats and I get a fluttery, empty feeling in my chest that leaves me lightheaded. Is it possible I had a heart attack that was missed? I've read heart attacks and pericarditis can read similarly on EKGs.

Hi jpickens, sorry to read about
your situation. Pericarditis will cause elevated troponin levels. In most cases pericarditis resolves on it's own, depending on the dr they may tell a patient to take Aleve or Motrin.
Enlarged heart & decreased ejection fraction all depends on the numbers based on the echo test. Strictly a guess, I suspect it's mild in nature & this is why you were told we'll keep an eye on it. You may never need a thing done except monitoring by way of routine testing. If anything alarming or something that would put you in danger the drs would have told you immediately. I've got heart valve problems that I am monitored for, this has been going on for 30 years. Along the way, there's been some changes but not enough to warrant surgery & I am good with that.
I think you should contact your pcp for an appt, write down your symptoms you have listed here, along with your questions. If you are not satisfied with what your dr tells you, request a 2nd opinion with another cardiologist.
When looking up medical things on the internet I look at the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic or John Hopkins. The information on these sites is accurate, there is too much garbage on the internet.
Take care.

I agree with Susie, get a second opinion - they may want you to wear a heart halter monitor. I went to the ER with an elevated heart rate of 220 bpm. My troponin levels were also elevated and was diagnosed with SVT. In addition to my cardiologist, I also see an electrophysiologist for monitoring. Stress/anxiety can also cause your heart rate to be elevated.

another cardiologist
I was never referred to a first cardiologist; my followup was with my PCP. Should I be seeing a cardiologist??

Yes, you should consult with a cardiologist to review your your testing for his/her opinion.
I don't know where you live or how hard it would be to get a consult, but you deserve to be evaluated by one.
