Hi Guys..its me again. Sick of me yet?!?  But you listen so well, and care so much that I have to share this with you. Ok, so as some of you know I have some severe vision problems thats been with me for about a year now. Prior to my vision problems starting something happened to me that I never told the doctors because Im scared they will laugh at me and tell me this has nothing to do with your vision......This is what happened to me....

 

I was at the dentist office getting a filling for some cavities I had. The dentist asked me if I wanted the gas or novacaine. I asked for the novacaine. When she was putting the needle into my gum, I felt this quick shock feeling...almost like a zap. The dentist felt it on her finger as well. She said, "my goodness did you feel that". Of course I did, it startled the heck out of me and what was that. She said that it was because she hit the nerve. Well, about 4 or 5 minutes later when the novacaine started kicking in, the whole left side of my face when numb as well as my left ear. All of a sudden, I felt whoozy lightheaded, sick to my stomach and faint. She said my face was pale and asked if I was ok. I said I feel sleepy and like I'm gonna die. She put oxygen on me and checked my blood pressure. It was 62/30 or something like that. I definately remember the top number being 62. I was like that for 5 minutes she fed me sugar and my body snapped out of it.

 

Her explanation was that there was not only novacaine but epinepherin in that shot as well to slow the bleeding from filling a cavity. What do you think may have happened??? I asked another dentist and he said the too much epinepherin entered my blood and slowed down everything in my body......any thoughts???

:-)  why would you be embarrassed to tell your doctor this  i think i  would definitely ask a few questions, it is not okay that you had that reaction. there is nothing wacky about what you describe  ask your doctor

thanks dreamgirl....i figured the doctor would be like...big deal, you had a reaction, but what does that have to do with anything else....

I agree with dreamy too.  I think you need to adress this issue with any and every doctor you can think of.  Reason being is that you dont want this sort of reaction to occur again...You could of had an allergic reaction to whatever it was that was given to you.  It needs to be noted in your medical file.

Definitely tell the doctors. I don't see why they would laugh. Anyway, it makes sense. The shot probably damaged a nerve. A nerve connected to eyesight. I am not sure if the doctors will be able to do anything -- it's not that easy to repair a damaged nerve. But you should tell them anyway.

I wouldn't be embarrassed..that same thing happened to me. But I was unaware of what was happening. All I remember was they had a bunch of cold towels on me. I too got faint, they said they could not find a pulse on me, and they said I was pale. I remember them panicking. But it was all so vague that I don't remember much.They told me that I had an allergic reaction to the epinepherin. They said no more eppie for you...then kept asking me if I felt ok? Then sent me on my way..

Hi Lori,

Wow. I can't believe that happened to you too. Did you get that wierd shock feeling too?? Are you ok now since that. Meaning did you feel wierd a few days after or anything??

please check out this website if you haven't already. there's a whole bunch of people just like us. they're trying to find the cause of palinopsia over there and it looks like they're working really well together.

I don't think that novicane has been used for years.  Are you sure is was novicane?  I certainly had that happen at least twice in my lifetime.  Did they sit you up and put your head down to your knees?   That's the normal thing.   Certainly sweatout while trying to figure out what happen. Whew!  Can happen any time they it a nerve.   Maybe I am a bit unlucky?  Dentist today are very good.  They will not give you a med after that type of reaction anymore.  Make  sure you chart it with them.  I don't use novicane...period.

I did have two teeth pulled last March.  I did well.  Yes, changed my Plavix and Coumandin around for a few days.  Think I was more afraid this time since I heart attack.  Like I said, today specialists are very good.   They are certainly watching me.  We are extremely special patients. :)

So, I told the doctor you guys. He laughed at me!! Also said that this is not connected with my other symptoms and that he has seen this happen to people. Thanks for all the comments!

Hi I think it could be that your blood pressure was very low, and I think it could be a good idea to get your doctor to give you a check-up, you could be diabetic.
I don't know if it helps but I find it difficult to go to the doctors as well and I have terminal heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Allways remember to keep smiling. Life can be tough sometimes.
The things that helps keep me going are my two little children and their is always someone worse off than me!!!

Hey thanks Bob. I was checked and Im not diabetic. I normally have low blood pressure, not too low but lower than 120/80. The doctor said it was a reaction from the novacain/epinepherine. He said it did drop my blood pressure but right after the reaction my blood pressure wen back up and never has gone that low before.

Thats great if I can be of any further help don't hesitate to contact me. Sorry if I don't get all my spelling right but I am dislexic. If its any help I have to take 48 tablets each day so I'm pretty well gened up on what they do and how they react. lol. Bob

Your spelling was fine.   I am recovering from a heart attack/stoke and now back to typing.  I never know what I might put in a sentence and try to check it.   Still working on the number things.  Kinda like being dylexic.   I didn't have sound/language either and I used expressions which actually works quicker. :) :(  amazing how computers work with us, isn't it.  I talked too much anyway.  Good luck to you, you have a lot to handle.

Thanks AnnieInoz. I take it that your name is Annie, mine is Bob and yes I do have a fair bit to handle, but just being able to talk about it does help!! I find it hardest on the weekends when I have my two wonderful children over to stay which is this weekend,because my ex and I have them on alternate weekends, so she gets some quality time with them.
When they are with me I have to try and not let them see when I am in pain as I don't want them to know about my condition and we can concentrate on having fun!! I am taking them horse riding in the morning and they want me to ride with them, so I guess i'm going to be tired in the afternoon but will still have to keep going.
Sorry to hear about your health problems I do know what you are going through, just remember it does get better and easier each day. Trust me I do know, and if I can be of any help, please don't hesitate to give me a shout. All the best for now. Bob

So sorry it has taken me this long to get back at you. Ya know I really don't recall have feeling wierd after that. All I know is that I felt like I was in a different place for a few minutes. My skin was very clammy. I'm sure if it was too serious they would have called 911. But I do normally have low blood pressure. Maybe that's what happened to me. I just remember saying they had a hard time getting my pulse and they threw them colds towels on me. I don't remember them doing anything else. But I do remember they did alot of work to my teeth and I had alot of shots. Someone mentioned that maybe a heart condition, well I was recently diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse,they said I was born with it, but not too sure if that had anything to do with it. Anyway kinda iffy about going back. Not something I would like to experience ever again. Glad you told your doc. I have never brought this up before either but I am now.

Hi everyone how are you all doing, sorry i've not been around much. I'm back on oxygen and finding it hard to stay awake, feeling very tired all the time. Don't suppose anybody's got a spare pump cos I think mine is not doing to well at the moment Dr has increased a lot of my meds but it does'nt seem to be doing much good yet.

Hi Bob..Im sorry to hear about this. Do you have low oxygen level, and if so, what is the level usually? What are the symptoms of low blood oxygen?

Hi Neurogurl the symptons are that you feel as though there is no air and when you try to breath in it feels like you are trying to suck a frozen milk shake through a straw. My O2 leve at the moment is about 75% but it should be in the very high 90s so this makes me feel very tired and week. Not much I can do other than use my O2 machine and bottle.lol for now I will catch you again later

Not sure you'll remember me. I wrote a while ago now about the palinopsia and you scared the life out of me with all the conditions it could be. Anyway i wend to docs and pleaded / cried for a opthamologist and mri. I spent the next month in a world of my own convinced i had a brain tumour or something along those lines. (quite hard when you have two young kids and a partner who works away all week) Am very very pleased to say everything came back fine. MRI was all normal and ophthamologist said it was nothing life threatening. I saw a private one and nhs one and they both said the same thing. Not that i understand what they say really. But when they said MRI came back clear i felt like i'd won the lottery and i really can't waste anymore of my life worrying about this.

Anyway they are now going to send me to London to do some light flashing tests whilst monitoring the messages being sent from my eyes to my brain. Have you had this done? They don't think there is a cure but would be good to find out the cause. Would be interested to hear if you have had this done and what the outcome was? I really do think / hope now that it is just a nuisance i have to put up with rather than a symptom of something bad. And there is a lot worse things out there to put up with i'm sure.

Anyway must go. But thought i'd update you.

P.S. Neurogurl - you asked if i got this all day. I get the afterimages mostly at night and in morning when it is dim light or artificial lights. Daytime is much better. The trailing bit is the same really. I don't usually notice it in the day. Coffee seems to make it worse too.

Hey Pocanut...Im so happy to hear that you went for an MRI and it was normal. This is great. The majority of us Palinopsia sufferers have normal MRI's. Structurally it seems are brains are fine but there are things that MRI cannot pick up like chemical/electrical wise. Palinopsia does come from our brains but its wonderful that atleast we know its nothing that serious. Please visit this website and join if you can...

All of these people suffer from palinopsia and we work together to find answers, but we share our experiences, symptoms etc.

Good luck to you and hope to see you at that forum! And just to put your mind at ease, all of us palinopsia sufferers in that forum have had many different tests, all which come back normal. However SPECT or PET scans seem to show abnormalities, these tests show blood flow or something like that.

Check out www.palinopsia.com for more info. It's a brand new site I just started for folks with palinopsia and other visual disturbance to exchange info.
