Hello..has anyone here ever had a pulmonary embolism due to Factor V Leiden. I was just recently told that I carry Factor V Leiden which increases my risk for Pulmonary Embolism. Im just looking to talk to someone about this. Thank you so much

Its an abnormal gene in your blood that would be inherited from your parents so that it is genetic. It means that you have an increased chance of developing a blood clot...anyone here ever had a pulmonary embolism??  Probably not because I don't think one can even survive a pulmonary embolism

I'm new to this forum but, I've recently signed up for the Migraine forum.

YES certainly you CAN survive Pulmonary Emboli , I can say this because I had 9 massive emboli they all slowly passed through my heart in a total of 2 days. They were the size of 50 cent piece EACH. OK yes I did die but, they worked very hard on me and I SURVIVED IT! They flew in a pulmonary specialist to see me ASAP, for a while there I had numerous doctors stunned with my survival. They said I would be touch and go for awhile and I was a miracle - one for the medical history books -

I am proudly alive - the body is an amazing thing!

Hi, I'm new here but I too have a story. In early 2004 my brother-in-law died of a PE following gall bladder surgery. In May 2004 I required an emergency gall bladder removal (the old kind - by incision). While still hospitalized I experienced a new pain behind my left breast, no more severe than other pains I have had for no known reason. An x-ray revealed pulmonary emboli, which really is the only time in my life I felt I might die. I always remember that "Hoss" of Bonanza fame died with PEs following gall bladder surgery, but more alarming to me is the fact that the year I was born my dad died suddenly from PEs while he was recovering from an accidental gun shot wound. I was scared! But warfarin for six months has kept me going and I'm so thankful. Thank you so much for the replies above. Wonderful! I learned a lot by going to Lucky97's site.

Thank you all for sharing your stories.....can I ask what your symptoms were when you had a PE??? And also, for those of you that had a pulmonary embolism, do you have factor v leiden?

Hi Neurogurl (and everyone else!),

My father has had 2 PEs due to Factor V Leiden.  He's also had several DVTs in his legs.  I was tested when considering BC options after having my son and am positive too.  I ended up with an IUD, which was actually great and am now PG with my second child.  I'm part of a study which looks at PG women who have thrombophilias such as Factor V Leiden and the pros/cons of anticoagulants during pregnancy.  We certainly have a higher risk of clots, but I wouln't worry too much.  My doctor said that just because you're positive for the mutation doesn't mean you'll 100% get a clot, just that your risk is higher.  Lots of people get DVTs and PEs who are negative for Factor V Leiden.  Do you know if you're heterozygous or homozygous for the gene?

Hi Neurogurl,

I am heterozygous as well, which is a good thing.  Not sure what my dad is.  An IUD is an intra-uterine device.  It's a birth control method that is safe for women like us.  As I'm sure you've been told we can't take birth control pills because of the hormones.  I also happen to be allergic to latex so I don't have a lot of options.  The IUD I had (Mirena) did have some hormones in it, but it's a VERY low dose and my thrombosis doctor said it was fine because it's localized as opposed to going through your whole system like the pill would.  Unfortunately it's best if you've already had a baby (because insertion is less painful if you have).  I don't know if you've had kids or not, but it might be worth looking into.  It also basically stops your period which is, in my opinion, the best feature!

Hi...thanks for the response! You've made me feel so much better! I was thinking that if you have FActor V Leiden that means you will definitely get a clot. During your pregnancy did you have to take any shots to keep your blood thin??  Like heparin shots??
