I'm taking omeprazole 20mg b.i.d. for about 3 months. I want to taper off it to see how I do "clean." What do folks recommend for doing this, like how long should I drag it out? Do you use a milder drug like Pepcid as backup, or alternate substances? Thanks!

Hi this is Kitt.  I would talk with your physician first.  I was taking this same medicine twice a day and just changed the dose to once a day in the morning about 6 months ago with my physicians ok.  I did not notice any difference other then occasional discomfort.

I believe it is doable but do check with your Doc. Good Luck.

Hey there, I found some new info today.................unfortunately it appears relapses are common when therapy is discontinued, thus long-term maintenance therapy with a PPI should be considered.  This is especially important for people with erosive esophagitis.

Hi Kitt,

Thanks for your posts! I've been really frustrated because I still have symptoms (mostly terrible taste after meals) while on the omeprazole. My endoscopy showed no erosion or other visible problems.
My GE wants to do pH monitoring and said he would want me off the PPI for a full week prior. I've read up on the test and can't quite see what difference it will make, but I'll probably do it anyway. In other words, I don't know if what I have is acid reflux or ??? That's why I thought I would get off the med on my own to see how it feels. If the original pain comes back, I guess I'll know.
As I'm sure you know, it's hard to get consistent advice from the docs (and I think mine is pretty conscientious). I'm not afraid to ask, but don't like to be bugging him every day.
Overall, I 'm getting kind of discouraged, losing weight, etc. etc. On the other hand, I had a piece of cheese pizza last week (first in months) and lived to tell about it!

Whoooooo Hoooooo a piece of pizza, what a treat.  I am glad you enjoyed it. 

The esophageal pH probe study has become the gold standard for the measurement of acidity with GERD because it is the most sensitive and specific test for reflux.  Is this the test your going to have done?
