I've had GERD for about 3 years and I'm taking 40 MG of Nexium 2 times a day. I'm still having symptons and my right throat is really bothering me. My brother died at age 42 of esophageal cancer, so that scares me.

I am scheduled for an endoscopy this Saturday.  Since I have anxiety, this makes it worst.  Can anyone who already had endoscopy recently tell me how this feels, how long it takes and what I should expect? I'm nervous! I know I need to get stonger quick.

I have had GERD for 18 years, for 15 years it was under control with meds. I just had my first endoscopy 3-weeks ago. It is a breeze! Once they gave me the medicine, per intravenous of a sedative and an amnesia drug, I didn't remmeber a thing. I went home, ate a light, lunch and slept for 6-hours. I am having gallbladder surgery on Monday then my surgeron will decide about my surgery for GERD. I am sorry about your brother, how long ago do you loose him? Best of luck to you. I love this blog to be able to vent and get support!

An Endoscopy is a breeze.

Take the sedation option and you will know NOTHING about it. I suffered no after effect and would never worry about another one.

Its interesting that your dr's allow you to take the medication without an endoscopy. After the initial trial we have to have an endoscopy done before the dr will give you long-term treatment.

I just had my first endoscopy a week ago (through the nose). I wasn't sedated, the doctor just sprayed something in my nose that froze my nasal passages and throat. The procedure itself was fine, but after a little while I got light headed, only because I'm a little squeamish when it comes to that sort of thing. If I do it again, I would get sedated if I had the choice, but just try to get yourself into the mindset that its not really a big deal.

I have had several endoscopy if your sedated you dont remember a thing and its a fairly easy procedure.

Thank you all for your reply.  Amo, my brother passed away almost 10 years ago.

Wknight, thanks for the comforting words.  There are many doctors that just treat GERD without the test, in fact, I had 3 doctors, but the GI doctor said they should have done it a long time ago specifically because of the family history and it's been 3 years.

I hope everything will be fine with my test. I'm anxious about this!

Hey Bees,

I have had this test and the prep is the only hard part, the test is easy as they medicate you and you float right through the scope.

I know you will be surprised how easy it goes.  Just be prepared to feel tired after the test.  Nap when you get home.

It's not a hard thing, actually I am looking forward to the relaxing on Monday morning when I have my endoscopy, but I certainly pray there is nothing seriously wrong in there, and i have to pray to calm completely down.
for me, I can't take Prevacid and Prilosec and Nexium, the proton pump inhibitors, they make things worse for me.
but i'm trying an H2 blockers, the histamine blocker Zantac, (Ranitidine) and we'll see how it goes. it wasn't bad years ago, i remember it helped, but i tried it again this morning, and we'll see as the day(s) go by.
I am, though, going to ask the doctor to not dilate unless it for sure needs it.
I cannot swallow solids at all now, even bits of it, but i want her to be sure it's not a structural problem like a diverticulum problem at the top of my throat, that's causing the problem. more than likely will be dilated, but i only want to have done the necessary things.

Finally, I got through this endoscopy with general anesthesia, they found some redness on my stomach and took biopsies, now I have to wait a week to find out what it is. I wonder if anyone had this cause I have no idea what it could be.
