Heartburn? Swallowing pain?

Hi, I also have reflux and have been a "known" asmatic for over 25 years.  Yes, my throat is very painful (reflux) and that in itself can affect your breathing.  My throat is very dry (asthma) and the whole thing is hard to take.  Have some other little problems too including IBS, hPB, severe arthritis, bad feet.  Am depressed too and can't imagine why (hee, hee).

I have Gerd and I rarely ever notice it anymore because I take one of 3 different prescription drugs called prevacid , pariet , or nexium (GOOGLE THEM ). They deal with it very well and in the near future if everything turns out to be correct in a gastroscopy test then I could be off of them completely, its been about 5 years since I started on them . Anyhow your problem really sounds like your brochial tube because of asthma but sometimes its nothing and sometimes its signs of heart trouble in the future . The comination of asthma and GERD is never a good mix for the heart .about november 2006 I had a hard time breathing and went through many tests including x-rays and ECG and literally became annoying . It was a very offensive experience because I was getting nowhere and then 3 months later had a heart attack and finally after being annoying some more I was diagnosed with emphysema one year after the heart attack .It took that long to get results , you need to be your own advocate and push and push and sometimes push hard to get results because a few things I've learned since this all took place is doctors are not gods and unfortunately the worst part is they are too cowardly to tell you that they just don't know whats wrong . They would rather insult their patients with wrong diagnosed or call them depressed and offer them psychiatric drugs of course I've never been offered psychiatric drugs or told that its all in my head but I've seen it far to often . GERD is a sign of worse things to come its one of those things people really have to put on a priorty list to control and eventually elliviate .

I have been reading this forum for a while and was shocked at the extent of the problems people have been encountering and lack of information they have been privy too. I had severe heartburn, reflux and severe indigestion for years along with the more embarrassing extended illness of IBS, I would wake during the night and every morning nauseous and dizzy and became more stressed. Doctor's were uninterested and quick to disclaim my symptoms as imaginary or inconsequential; as one forum member has pointed out one has to push ones own case. After an endoscopy at the beginning of the year I was diagnosed with Barratt's syndrome - a 2cm section of my oesophagus had become intestinal lining. Since then I have completely changed my lifestyle, I keep an extensive food diary so to isolate anything that might trigger an attack, I eat less more often and never later than 3 hours before I go to sleep. I have raised the head of my bed about 20cm (with blocks under the feet) to nullify the morning nausea and most importantly I avoid stress wherever possible. All this has been more effective than taking esomeprazole (nexium) or omeprazole. Although I still have attacks they are generally milder and less frequent.
I understand some peoples symptoms are worse and different, but this has helped me and I don't intend to be taking drugs every day for the rest of my life. Identify the causes and don't stress or worry - nothings that important.

Hello and welcome to the GERD Forum.  It is nice to hear from someone who has overcome their issues.  As you say each person is different and you were lucky to find a physician that took good care of you.

Stress reduction was a good reminder to all of us.  We do have some people with Anxiety/ Depression and other Mental Health Disorders so they need to deal with more than just one dx and they need extra help in gettng through this disorder.
