For those taking Nexium, how much do u take?   I just started, I was able to be off it for more than 2 yrs and I don't remember now how much I took before.

I do not take Nexium but you could call your physician's nurse and ask her to check your medical record. :-)

How are you doing with your GERD?  I see you are having a lot of issues with the meds.

yeah, I had dizzines and felt like throwing up last night and also I felt like my joints were hurting(like I'm coming down with a cold). I stopped the Nexium, I relaly think this is too much for me. I tried this 3 yrs ago and I think my dose was much less than 40 mg, I can't remember. I feel much better today. Why can't I just stay on Zantac? It helps me out a lot and like I said the only issues pretty much is at night, I sleep on a wedge but I roll off it a lot and then I get the heartburn. During the day I'm fine.
I have an appt with my dr. this week and I will just ask him to either keep me on Zantac or maybe take Prilosec, this worked for me before, just the OTC. I don't even need it everyday.

I thought I saw you post that u take Prilosec. How much do u take and how long have u been using it?

I take 40 milligrams of Nexium 1x a day. My doctor would like me to take it 2x a day but my body can't handle that. It causes me to have severe short term memory loss. I turn around and can't remember what I was going to do and this is constant through out the day when I take the Nexium 2 x in a day. I can't even remember the names of every day items I use. It's very scary. Has any one else had this side effect? Barb

Oh my gosh that is scary but I have heard of that before too. Especially if you've been on it long-term. I am no longer dizzy and nauseated today. I didn't take Nexium today. I can't believe the doc gave me 40 mg? I told him my reflux is not that bad and I don't think my body can handle this large dose.

I also forgot to mention that last night I woke up with palpitations! I hate this drug so much!

Of course my doctors don't beleive that it causes that as it is not a listed side effect. I already have permanent damage to my short term memory from taking Zocor for cholesterol for 6 months after my stent was put in. After I figured out that was doing it and quit my memory improved some but never to where it was before. That  might be why the Nexium affects me in that way. I can't take aspirin, ibuprofen or any of the statins as they cause severe stomach problems so I know what its like to have problems with side effects from meds. I even tried niacin for my cholesterol and was doubled over with tummy pain. If you don't have to take the stronger med yet I wouldn't. I started out with Zantac at age 23 and each one quit working they gave me the next strongest drug so I have had them all over the years. Barb

Hi Barb. I took a Zantac this evening, 75 mg. I've been doing a lot of research lately about PPIs, mostly for my toddler's sake who is only 16 months old and have been on Prevacid for 1 yr. I want her off this drug so bad but I'm going to do a slow wean for her. She sees her pediatric GI next week and I will ask.

My mother is in her 60s and she just started on Prilosec this weekend after yrs of suffering with reflux. I'm worried about her because she is so stubborn! She is having a hard time swallowing adn still drinks 2 cups of coffee a day. I'm pestering her to go see a GI doctor and get a GI probe study. With her I really think she needs to take a PPI for life even....I just want her to be better. She's not willing to change her diet much either....what am I gonna do with her.

Well I have started taking the Nexium 2x a day for the last 3 days because I am desparate for relief from this unrelenting heart burn. I can't even get any sleep because of it. Last night my throat was so swollen that I couldn't lay down at all with out gasping for air. Sitting up in a lazy boy didn't do wonders for my back. I'm exhauseted. Barb

I started on the 40mg delay release of Nexium around 5 pm yesterday. Last night after I urinated I had a burning sensation when I wiped. This morning the same thing happened. Could this be from the Nexium? I have taken it in the past, but never had that burning. I know I haven't been drinking enough this week because I have been fighting a stomach bug, or maybe it is just my reflux and ibs acting up. I am taking a couple other meds also, so maybe my urine is too potent from all of that. I have no other symptoms that would indicate a bladder infection.

I don't know if it causes that. I had to stop taking my nexium 2x a day because after 3 days my short term memory was affected so bad it was showing on the job. It wasn't helping any way. I am down to one nexium a day and then 2x a day pepcid and 2x a day sucralfate and then Gaviscon break through formula 2x during the night. I think it might all be starting to work a little as last night the heart burn wasn't quite so bad. I still slept sitting up. I am hoping by tomorrow night I can actually sleep in my bed on my wedge. tongue   Barb

Where did u get your wedge? I would be great if only I can stay on my wedge but I wake up often at night and I'm off it. I bought this wedge from Knox Foam.

BTW I just started using Prilosec which is what I used 3 yrs ago and what worked for me. So I'll try and use it for 14 days just like it said on the package.

I haven't tried the wedge yet but I think i will.I'm going to try to put in under the mattress.For a double bed,I guess I'll have to ger 2. Carol

I got my wegde at a local pharmacy that sells medical equipment. My GI doc told me recently that the wedge is not the best thing because it put pressure on your stomach by bending you at the waist. He told me to get risers and just put them under the head of the bed. I can't lay flat because of a back injury so that didn't work for me. I even tried the risers and the wedge and still had heart burn at night. So I'm at a loss as to what to do any more. Barb

I got my wedge for 39.99 at Knox Foam and it helps if I sleep on my side. But the problem is I wake up always flat, I don't stay on it. So this morning I woke up feeling like raspy probably from acid backing up. Otherwise I'm fine during the day....unless I overeat. I just need to figure out what to do at night. I hate sleeping sitting up.

I had the wedge and had 4 pillows on top of it and I still ended up flat on my back.

Maybe you should get some risers for your bed instead that way you wouldn't have to worry about slidding off your wedge. I got plastic ones at Walmart for around $10 and put them under the head of the bed. I can't lay down at all any more. I sleep in my lazy boy sitting up and I still have heartburn. If i lean it back I wake up gasping for air. Just out of curiosity are you over weight at all? I ask because my doctor thinks that if I lose weight that all my problems will magiacaly disapear. I don't believe it for a minute because every one else in the family that has heart burn are thin including my 2 children and they still have it. I don't know if it might help because I have had the surgery. I never have been thin since I had the surgery. I need to lose about 70 pounds. I already lost 20.5 in the last year by going to TOPS. When I was a normal weight I still had heart burn but that was before I ever had surgery. It would be nice if losing weight took care of it all. Barb

Barb - no I'm not overweight. I'm 5'0 tall and about 100 lbs. I'm stressed out a lot though. I'm too young to have heartburn! Yuck!

See I think my doctor is wrong about the weight thing, but never the less I am going to keep trying to lose the weight as I have other problems like my heart to think about too. I started with heart burn at age 14 so I guess no age is too young for this terrible disease. I'm 46 now. Well I have to go try to get some sleep in my chair. Thanks for getting back to me on that. OK I noticed a big difference. I gave up carbonated drinks again. I'm off Prilosec and just taking DGL, not as much as I should. Feel better! I had no heartburn last night and I ended up sleeping flat again! Thank God!

I asked my chiropractor what he suggested and he told me I was taking too many of the things to quell the acid which was leaving food fermenting in my stomach which lets off gases that cause the acid to bubble up. That kind of makes sense. I'm willing to try anything at this point. He told me to get some digestive enzymes from the health food store. Well I am off to my chair for the night. Glad you are getting some releif and some sleep precious. Hope that keeps working for you. Talk to you later. Barb

Are you going to stop taking the Nexium? I gave up caffiene and carbonated stuff but its not working for me. I'd be willing to try the enzymes too.

I don't think I will ever be able to go with all natural stuff but maybe that and the nexium I take once a day will work. I would like to get off the pepcid, sucralfate and gaviscon break through formula though. I'll go to the health food store on Saturday when I am over that way. I'll let you know who it goes with the enzyms. I don't have any caffiene or carbonated beverages, nothing spicey or acidic. Very bland at this point. At least I slept better last night in my chair. I even had dreams which has been a while since I slept that good. Barb

Hi Precious; my two cents is when I was on Nexium, I initially took x1 40mg a day. Then when I swapped to x2 20mg a day I found it had a far better result. Maybe it was to do with distributing the dosage through the day, rather than relying on a single hit.

No I'm feeling fine.  I'm not going back to Nexium ever!  I saw my PCP the other day and he said that the side effects I mentioned does happen with Nexium.   I will take Zantac if I need it.  I'm doing fine, although I'm stressed bec. my family and I are living since yesterday at an extended stay hotel.  WE had a severe ice storm and we have no heat and electricity in my city (Louisville, KY).  It's hard being confined in one small place with a 16 month old!  So also bec. we are here I've been eating fastfood again!  And that doesn't help.   And I had some Pepsi yesterday.   Everything is so much better when I'm not eating junk food.  

I am just thankful to God I found this hotel, they are booked solid.  We are in a state of emergency now and the mayor said about 10 days before we get our power and heat back on.  So I'm kind of stressed about this but I'm trying not to.

Panda - DGL means Deglyrrychinzed licorice( I think I may have spelled it wrong).
