Nexium = decalcification of my teeth

Hi,

I've been on nexium 40mg for the past year. In the last three months my teeth have become painful and my front teeth (top four and bottom four) have started becoming transparent.

I went to the dentist and he said it is due to de-calcification. He said he has had numerous patients come in with cracked/de-calcified teeth due to nexium. Nexium apparently inhibits calcium absorbtion and can lead to a calcium deficiency.

He also said that if I take a silica+calcium supplement twice a day, some or all of this can be reversed, providing that my tooth enamel hasn't been damaged.

Has anyone else experienced this? If I can't reverse this, I am going to get 8 veneers with costs some serious $$$

Perksie, the thinning of the enamel may not be from the nexium, but rather from the acid getting to your teeth, I have the same thing. Have you had blood work done?, what is your calcium level? If you're worried that this may be the cause start taking Vitamin D with a calcium supplement to aid in the absorption.

Watch your intake of colas', this has a direct effect on the enamel as well..oh yes, there are chewing gums and toothpaste that also work to strengthen the enamel and they work too.

Hi Janice,

Usually if I get reflux make it's way that far up I end with a burnt throat (and a sour acid taste), which hasn't happened for a long time. When I stopped taking Nexium three weeks ago the pain went away the following day...so I do believe that it is somewhat related.

Good idea with the blood test...I didn't think of that. I don't drink any cola/fizzy drink or any acidic juice, but I will keep it in mind.

I hope you can reverse your problem. Veneers can cost from $500 to $2000 a tooth. Porcelain veneers are generally the most expensive and longest lasting. Veneers are considered cosmetic and rarely paid for by dental plans.

Is Nexium the only med that people know of that causes this problem?

Not sure if other meds cause it, but I've heard numerous reports that Nexium is known to cause this. Another person at my work is in his 40s, been taking nexium for 2 years and fractured his hip from a minor fall. The doctor said his bones are starting to become porous and advised him to take a high grade calcium supplement whilst he is on nexium. Usually fractured hips are something you get when your in 70s+

While the doctor couldn't confirm or deny that Nexium was a contributor in this case, I still believe it is what has contribute to my teeth. Anyway, my advice is whilst your on a PPI, you should take a quality multi-vitamin and a calcium supplement that contains silica, vitamin d and magnesium. Silica greatly improves calcium absorption.

Wow, I did not know this was a side effect of nexium. Does this include all PPI's??

I had Prilosec burn holes through my healthy teeth. It could be acid reflux doing that to you, my dentist thinks it was for me. I'd take really good care of your teeth and ask what you can do until you get veneers if you do.

Nope, I've been on it for almost 10 years... still got a head full that grows like weeds.

Hmmmm my dentist is really good and he has never said anything to me about the Nexium. He always asks for a list of what I am taking for meds. Last summer my teeth were so sensitive that my dentist thought I had to have a root canal but when he took xrays there was nothing. He came to the conclusion that it was from grinding my teeth because there was evidence of that and as soon as I got a mouth guard the pain and sensitivity went away so make sure the dentist checks into every thing before you get anything done.
