Hello Jasmine,
I don't want to be abrasive here, but you have a serious diagnosis, it can be a pre-cancerous condition. Speak with your doctor about things to avoid. This is of utmost importance. My husband was diagnosed with Barrett's until his test results came back and they down graded him to ulcers and gastritis. However, while we were living with the Barrett's disgnosis we read all possible literature about it. Barrett's Esophagus means, not only have you damaged your stomach, you have also damaged your esophagus. Your stomach can repair itself, your esophagus can not.
First and foremost, do not eat anything with acid, no pineapples, no oranges or orange juice, no lemons or limes, no tomato products of any kind (no tomato soup, tomato sauce, tomato paste) no garlic, no greasy or fatty foods, no onions, no caffiene, no carbonated beverages, no peppers, no spices, and no alcohol. It seems very rash at first, but heed this diet to begin with, and for about 6-8 weeks. Do not wear tight pants or a belt after you eat. Do not lie down after meals for at least 2-3 hours. If you can, raise just the head of your bed 6 inches higher than the foot of the bed. Barrett's is a very serious condition, my Father had Barrett's, and then he developed esophagal cancer and stomach cancer.
After your stomach has calmed down a bit, you can add spices to your food like rosemary, basil, oregano, and cilantro. You can add new things one at a time, so if you react poorly to something you'll know what it was. We had alot of fish, chicken and eggs with brown rice or boiled potatoes.
It sounds very drastic I know, but learning a new way to eat is a lot better than say, chemo therapy or radiation. Please read this for yourself. Go to your browser, I use Google, type in Mayo Clinic, it will show the clinic's different categories, go to diseases and conditions, then in the upper right corner at little from the top will be a search box for the Mayo Clinic, type in Barrett's Esophogus, see for yourself.
After reading it you will see how important it is for you to learn how to manage this unpleasant disease. My husband and I were glad to have his condition down graded, but as you'll read, Barrett's is the next step for him too. We take it very seriously. I have redone all my recipes, taking out onions, garlic, etc. We never have anything with a red sauce anymore, no pizza, and drastically different soups with no garlic or onions.
The good news is, he has been able to add some of them back, like diet, caffiene free pepsi; decafe coffee, he even has a glass of wine every now and again. I am Native American, so drinking for us is not important. He eats potential irritating foods at lunch, that way it will be hours before he will be lying down. His doc said that lying down was the most serious instruction to follow, Do Not Lie Down after a meal for at least 2 and half hours. Having acid anywhere near your esophagus is the main thing to avoid. You don't want to damage it any more than it is.
Check back with this site, we post recipes that will give you more variety, a lot of us are in this boat, we may as well help each other when we can.
My husband has had his condition for almost two years, and we still enjoy eating, there are many things he can have, we just didn't know what they were! Just tonight I amde him Banana Cream Pie for our anniversary. We both eat very healthy now, I try to add a new recipe every month.
Sorry if I jumped at you, between my Father not heeding his warnings, and then being afraid my husband may suffer the same fate, I get a little panicky about it. Thank God it is something that can be managed.
Good luck, Gremma
