burning throat pain

Hi - this is "kathincan" and I've never been in a chat room before, but I just woke up (5 am) and regurgitated a mouth full of burning bile, drank several mouthfulls of water, nearly died of the throat pain (exaggeration) and immediately Googled "Bringing up burning bile", and there it was, all you people with the same thing.  Previously I may have had a tiny bit of bile but never this much.  I take "Losec" for other stomach ailments so I took one of those and now, about 1/2 hour later, I'm registered into this chat room, and my throat is feeling some better.  I'd be scared to take vinegar!  I'll be calling my doctor first thing in the morning and will update you on what she tells me.  Actually I ate some Valentine candy last night and I think that must have caused it. 

I was diagnosed with osophagitis with a moderatley large hiatel hernia about 15 years ago. I am a white male age 45. about 5 years ago at my local VA hospital I was diagnosed with barrets osophagus. I was asked to comeback once a year because I had abnormal cell growth in my osophagus and they wanted to test it every year.
I havn't been back but latley I have been waking up in the middle of the night with a burning throat and it doesnt seem to be because of stomach bile in my throat which i have had a lot of in the past. it feels like it is in my chest and throat I am assuming some type of inflamation.also I seem to have some type of irritable bowel it gets so bad at times that if I drink a small amount of water or eat a cracker i have to run to the bathroom. I heard from the gastrointestinologist that diagnosed me with osophagitis 15 years ago that upper GI medicine eventually damages the lower GI. Has anyone else had these types of problems?

Gallie, I've noticed that when i have a burning in my throat and i take a tums it seems to relieve the pain temporarly and then it seems like for days after i am suffering, I was wondering myself if tums is doing temp relief but giving me pain days after.

My throat was killing and I was willing to try anything. I was headed to the kitchen to do the vinegar thing when the word "pickle" popped in my head. Pickels sit in vinegar and probably are better tasting than a spoonful of raw vinegar. So I popped open a jar and ate a pickle. Instant relief and a nice late night snack. It worked for me, I'm off to bed now. Worked so well I registered to these foums so I could share. So if you're sitting there with a burning throat and an awful taste in your mouth... go eat a pickle. G'night and God bless!

Unfortunately I have suffered from acid reflux and the burning throat at night for years. I take 40mg of Nexium every night at dinner time and it does wonders for the heartburn. As long as I remember to take it I don't get any heartburn. As for the waking up with the burning throat, I have never found anything that helps. I try to take 2 tylonol or advil as soon as it happens and it does relieve the pain within 20 minutes. It is a very long, painful, 20 minutes but at least I do end up getting relief from it. Before doing this I use to suffer with it for hours. And if I went back to sleep I would wake up with it again in another hour or so. The tylonol or advil usually stop it from coming back in the same night. Hope this helps!

Hello everyone.  I'm new to this forum, however so far I finding this thread to be very helpful.  To be honest, I'm not sure what I'm experiencing.  I'm a 28 yr. old female who loves spicy foods, red wine and an occasional cigarette after a couple cocktails. Anyway, what brings me to this site (and hopefully this would encourage feed back) is tonight I experienced the worst burning sensation in my throat.  I'm prone to strep throat and losing my voice, but the burning sensation in my throat when I exhale is a feeling completely foreign to me.  Literally, I'm almost in tears.  At first, it felt like a cooling sensation as I inhaled through my nose and eventually it began to burn and the feeling got worse and worse especially when I breathed out.  How long does this burning sensation last? Also, the past couple months I've felt unusually nauseas after meals.  In posting my concerns with all of you, I am aware of the obvious- that I should consult with a doctor.  In fact, I plan to tomorrow morning because whatever this burning feeling is in my throat is pretty scary.  Am I alone in this feeling, is this acid reflux, am I going to be okay?   I'm greatful for any information and advice!

Just passing through.  Just found out from doctor I have a gerd problem.  All this seems complicated.  I've had burning throat for a long time.   I wake up flat on my back and soon my throat starts to burn.  It also happens at different times during the day.  I don't know anything about all the medicines used for this.  To cool the burn, I eat ice cream.  A spoonful  will usually do.  I keep ice cream in the frig just for that purpose.  Because when it starts to burn,  its unbearable. 

The doctor gave me OMEPRAZOLE 20mg and it seems to be very effective.

WOW......THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME.....JUST STARTED WITH THE BURNING THROAT A WEEK AGO AND AM TRYING ALL THE DIFFERENT THINGS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.....EVEN BOUGHT A REMEDY OFF THE INTERNET AND SO FAR NONE OF THAT IS WORKING EITHER....AM ON NEXIUM ALSO 40 MG DAILY BUT SO FAR IT HAS NOT HELPED.........AM HEADING TO A HERBALIST TOMORROW TO TRY FIND OUT MORE AND GET SOME RELIEF !!!!............IF I FIND ANYTHING THAT REALLY HELPS, I'LL SURE PASS IT ALONG,,,,,,GOOD LUCK TOP ALL....THIS SUCKS FOR SURE.....

After reading everyone else's posts I figured that I would make one of my own. Unfortunately, I've had stomach issues for a long time now. I have regular heart burn, acid reflux, a peptic ulcer (w/ GERD) and I am lactose intolerant... good times. This morning I woke up with the horrible burning in the back of the throat and a slightly upset stomach, it was bad enough that I almost lost it and threw up, but having done that before I knew that it would just make things a whole lot worse. I had some soda and clam chowder last night (which I found out was made with a lot of milk / half and half mixed in) and I am pretty sure thats what caused this episode. I haven't had this happen to me for a while now. I keep a GI Cocktail on hand just in case of really bad stomach problems (something that the ER mixed up for me), but as bad as this is, its not nearly as bad as some of the other stomach pains that I've been through, so I decided not to take the cocktail for this. Instead I made one of my own, I had some antacids, which I took right away (although the doctor has me taking prilosec, which doesn't seem to help), then I took some left over throat spray from the strep throat I had a while ago and put a topical anesthetic (Lidocaine) in it and mixed well and sprayed my throat... which helped quiet a bit, but not as much as I had hoped. Then I got the bright idea to take some of my subuxone (narcotic pain killer, thebaine derivative, from opium), which is 40 times more powerful than morphine and taken sub lingually (which usually numbs my tongue and part of my throat in a non topical / local way) and finally that did the trick! You can get local / topical anesthetics and throat sprays over the counter, I'd definitely recommend to have something like that on hand for anyone who's gone through the burning pain of having stomach acid or bile rise up to the back of their throats and burn like the dickens...

Sometimes I think that taking all this stuff, like antacids, prilosec, etc, just masks the problem and then we think we are fine and start eating things that we enjoy but used to hurt us and are causing even more damage that the drugs are covering up. Which is something that I found to be true with pain killers in general. (old motorcycle accident), I was on them for 3 years and found that once I FINALLY got off them, things were worse in a lot of ways because I abused my body without really knowing the damage I was doing. That makes me wonder if the same thing applies for stomach medications or all medications, really. I know that antacids and prilosec control the amount of acid that your body produces, which can be a good thing, but then we start eating hot wings, or tomato sauces, or other things that used to bother us until it comes back even more severe... which in retrospect, seems a bit self destructive, but its nice being able to enjoy the good things in life, even if they aren't good for us...
maybe I'm just thinking about it too much... :)

A GI cocktail is something they used to try in the ER to see if it helped the stomach pain and perhaps give a clue as to whether or not the problem was heartburn versus something else.



It is made of 15 ml of Maalox and Lidocaine gel and is not something that you would take to keep your GERD under control.



I think Joy has advised you well, see a GI Physician and look into the possibility of surgery as an option for your problems. JMHO
