Thanks, Wendi.
It's great to have this forum, so we can support each other through this. I'm not a doctor, but it's my belief that if you can get your lungs clearer by eliminating any wheeze (which means closed up passages), you'll be able to cough up mucous more easily.
Mucous that is trapped is easily infected, and will just contribute to more problems. I take a nebulizer treatment before taking my inhalers (Serevent, to keep things
open long-term, and Flovent, to apply a spray of anti-inflamatory steroid directly to the lung surface.) It's my belief that they work better if I can get the mucous out first--to make sure that the meds reach the right places.
My doctor and surgeon both said that it's common to get some fluid on the lungs after surgery, so it makes sense that individuals with lung issues to begin with, will have more difficulty coping with that.
What a coincidence that we both work in the classroom!
My swallowing seems better today for some reason. Go figure. I guess it's a constant forward and backward movement as far as that goes.
My doctor sent me home with instructions to start with soft foods. After seeing him yesterday, I was given permission to use my own judgment. Small bites, chew chew chew--things that mush up completely. What a treat, though. I have had saltines with soup, and toast with cream of wheat. They went down just fine (after being chewed completely). I can't eat very much at a time, though...maybe a third of a cup total input. So I'm trying to eat more often, to ensure that I'm getting enough nutrition to allow my body to heal. I've lost 7 pounds...I'm glad of that, because when I have to go back to school, I want my clothes to be loose and comfortable! I actually didn't worry about
losing weight after the holidays, because I was going to have this surgery, and I knew that the weight would drop off.
Hang in there, Wendi! We're going to do just fine. And in the process, by sharing our journey, we can help others make informed decisions about
their own health choices.
Have a great day!
Denise
