Hello,
My mother and I have been suffering from acid reflux for most of our lives. We have been on med's to control until we found food combining really helped. There is a lot of information on the internet about this. But the theory behind combining are the acids used to break down the foods.
Proteins (meat, fish, eggs) are broken down and absorbed by acids
Starches and carbs are broken down and absorbed by alkalines
When these two combine they cause a chemical reaction which both become ineffecitve at their jobs and disgestion stops in the intestinal tract. The result is gas, bloating and heartburn.
As long as I don't combine proteins and starches in the same meal I am fine. Once in awhile I will combine the two 50/50 mix, but I know it will make me sick. If I combine a 25/75 mix I'm okay. But I don't do that often. It's really simple and for both of us it has worked wonders. It does take dedication as now your menu planning will change but we have found it well worth it. I have cut back coffee to 2 a day max and have my glass of wine with dinner (but I can still include it without problems). I have also cut back (or out) fried foods and sugar and that makes a big difference.
A bonus for us, is we can now eat fruit again. The acids from fruit / fruit juice gave us instant acid reflux. But consuming fruit on it's own lets it process without other acids getting in it's way. Fruit is best eaten alone or 30 min after a meal and fruit juice best consumed alone or with the fruit, but not with your meal.
We have been doing this for a couple of years now and neither one of us need to take med's any longer.
Good luck to everyone and I hope this helps. - Cynja
