I have a type of Gerd that is called Laropharoreal(spelling) Reflux and have an ulcer on my vocal cord as a result. Is there anyone else here that has this condition? Is it a recurring condition and what is your diet? How do you deal with the awful bland diet. I also take 40mg of Nexium twice a day. If you can give me some advice, please write back as soon as you can. Thanks so much, Kathy

I had this as well as regular reflux; this is considered a silent reflux because the symptoms are different than GERD; the damage, however, can be pretty bad. The chances of damage to your lungs through aspiration are greater with LPR than with GERD as well as the damage to your vocal cords. The good news is that once the disease is under control, the vocal cords will start to heal and further damage to your lungs will stop (if you have this issue).
You need to follow the same self help steps as someone with GERD and if you find that you are not getting better, then get to a very good GI Dr. who can help you. The diet may help, but if your LES is floppy or weak, than acid, regardless of diet, will still get up into your throat and do the damage that you are now aware of.
Have you had a GERD work-up yet?, have you seen and ENT? or a GI?, perhaps both? If not, I would encourage you to do so.

Hi Jane,

Thanks so much for the information. I have had a workup and am seeing a surgeon shortly. I really don't have the burning acid problem but have to follow the Gerd diet. I have a few other questions I hope you can help me with. I was wondering how long you've had this yourself and how you deal with any anxiety you may have and also the very bland diet. Is it possible to eat some things you really enjoy once in a while? Is dinning out a problem for you. Do you have any suggestions about it? If you have any meal plans or recipes that help improve the bland diet I'd appreciate it so much. I am very unhappy with the few choices in food I have. Also, what do you think about soy milk? I really could use some advice. Thank you very much for your time. K
