GERD with back pain??

Hi has anyone out there have GERD along with chronic back pain?  Also what's the longest it usually takes to get relieve?  I have been on nexium for 3 weeks and have no relief now I am trying prevecid.  I don't know what to do since the doctor's don't have much more to say about this. They did suggest a stomach cat scan but that's another major expense and I don't know if it will really make any difference.  I have lost over 25 lbs cause I can't eat and I'm always queasy.  Thanks for any tips you may have

Your thread caught my attention...I have been experiencing GERD with an extreme tightness and pressure between my shoulder blades and about halfway down my back...not pain like you describe but this terrible tightening...this has been going on for 6 weeks so I can empathize with you. Where exactly is the pain located in your back? Is it sharp or dull? Does anything relieve it all (other than medication)?

I don't know about Nexium or Prevacid - I've been on Protonix for a week...I do know that these medications can take a long time, as long as 8 weeks, to heal any esophageal damage.

I'm surprised your doctors didn't suggest an endoscopy. I don't understand, either, what the value of a abdominal CAT scan would be, but I'm no doctor. There's a chance that the back pain is unrelated to the GERD - it could be stress or any number of things.

Anyway, I know I haven't been much help, but I wish you well.

I've had GERD for over 12 years and have been on Prilosec all that time. No back pain or any other symptoms with Prilosec. I agree with revjr1 that the back pain is probably not related to GERD. Hope you start feeling better.

I have been nexium now for about 6 weeks and i get the back pain too. Course now for some reason my body keeps giving off this not feeling well feeling. I don't like it and i certaintly don't understand it. My endscope came back normal but because my problems seem to be continously worse... so i have a memetric test and ph 24 test coming up.
So i feel ya and yes my gi doc told me nexium has that side effect.

I see you have met some of our  members and they have adviced you well.

I do not have back pain but I do have the severe heartburn which I use a PPI for.

I have severe back pain this morning because I let myself pig out late last night!

A hotdog, Bratwurst, and candy after 10 PM was a very bad idea, lol!

I started dealing with this when I was young also. It started when I was 18. I had a nasty habit of chewing back then and though the heartburn was from that. I quit 3 weeks before my daughter was born, but the heartburn continued. I was in the Navy at the time and they had no idea what was causing it and said to take tums or rolaids. I got out in '96 and decided to see a doctor at home about it and was diagnosed with GERD/ relux then.

Have they checked you for galbladder function. I had horrible nausea and pain from mine. They tested for stones with a ultra sound but it took them 3 months to figure out it was not functioning right because they kept thinking it was just my gerd. I felt alot better after they took it out. Before i had my nissan I would have pain from my chest all the way through to my back that felt like I had a knife through me.

Cody, I've had GERD since I was 14years old so I know what you mean and I over did as a teen ager and young adult too. It is hard to stick to a strict diet when every one else is eating what ever they want. Barb

Hello Everyone....

 I had no earthly idea that GERD causes Back Pain confused .....I was diagnosed last year with this but only recently (past 2 months) started to deal with back pain. I have been taking Nexium since last November. I usually do not eat late at night but last night ate at 8:30 pm (pretty heavy meal) and boy, am I feeling it in my back today!!! Thanks for the insight....and glad it's not just me!!!
