Hi everyone, just home from a sort of discouraging Dr. appt. We met with the Radiation Onco; he was wonderful, he said they were all taken by surprise by the size of this thing and were in no way prepared for that finding.nor the finding of a second site.

The final path shows that it is fast growing, fairly aggressive and has a high likelihood for recurrence. The margins aren't as clear as they would like and tomorrow my surgeon, the RO and the pathologist are meeting, reviewing the slides and determining if they have to do more surgery.

Because of the size of the mass, I do not qualify for the 5 day mammosite radiation, but instead have to do the 6 week stuff. I'll be doing that here in Lansing since I can't be gone from home and work for that long a period of time.

I'll know about the surgery tomorrow!

I don't know all your history, but I'm so sorry that this seems to be more than what you expected. I don't even know if we can be prepared to hear all the bad news, each piece of it. But it sounds like you are getting good treatment.

Are you happy with your treatment team and location? I only ask because I do think it can matter to have the best of care. I'm only a couple of hours from the Cleveland Clinic, and know many people who have gone there. Of course there are many other terrific places. Sounds like you have a great team, though. Plus your support system here.

I wish you all the courage and strength you need to walk through this. Somehow I have a hunch you've got those qualities.

Hi everyone, well, the phone call this morning was serious.  First thing he told me was that they are all in agreement, I need more surgery.  He said that this is not your typical benevolent DCIS, this is High Grade, angry, fast growing, agressive stuff.  There's a lot of necrosis, much more so than in the biopsy and how this hasn't beocme invasive yet is a mystery.  He said this is serious and I have a serious chance of this becoming invasive.

 I think my next step is an MRI of both breasts, and then the decision to go with re-excision with (hopefully) good margins, or a mastectomy, or possibly a double mastectomy.  He said that the type of tissue seen in the slides is generally not a unilateral event, most often a bilateral finding, so we'll see.

 He said that they did not expect this either, they thought this was a little itty bitty typical DCIS, take out, 5 day rads and I should be good to go.  He completely understands my quandry in the treat/no treat with the information I was presented as well.  Things have changed completely, though, haven't they!

 I should hear from my surgeon this evening and we'll go from there...I love traveling to Goshen!!!!  In any event, if I'm not glowing int he dark after this, I may be listing when I walk LOL!!!

I am so sorry to hear this latest report  but you have my support and together with all your friends and family you will make it through this and be better off in the end.  I am sure of this as I am still on my knees sweetie and I am working on new cheers to support you.

I am sure this is a shock to you as it would be to anyone but with a lot of prayer and a good surgeon and a bit of glowing in the dark let's kick this darn disease to the gutter and get you back on track with living your life cancer free.

You are brave beyond words my friend.................lots of gentle hugs to you and we are here for you.

I am up doing jumping jacks and it is early here.  My hubby is wondering why the house is shaking............LOL.

Just to let you know I am here in Wisconsin and my job is to make sure my in-laws get to church tomorrow morning so you can figure at 9:15 AM tomorrow morning I will truly be on my knees and you will be in my prayers.  I will ask my MIL to pray for you too.  Now God listens to her.  shocked Me, well sometimes he listens as long as my MIL is not online with him. LOL.

Good morning everyone! I have a few minutes while Tom is cutting the grass...(very allergic, so I'm indoors for a little bit!) Marie, thank you for you kind words, I certainly appreciate it. You are very right, I am blessed by the strength of friendship and prayers of the wonderful people here!!

Kitt, God love you! We go to 7:30 Mass ourselves (Tom..not so happy with that idea!, but he goes just to humor me I think!!)

I've received the most wonderful PM's from Bea and Denise too and I have to tell you, the kindnesses that you all (and I mean ALL!!) have bestowed upon me literally brings tears to my eyes!

We've decided to stay home this weekend and work around the house and yard, laundry, cleaning drawers (ouch!) and enjoying the beautiful weather. Kitt, if you could attach a picture from the wedding??? ooh, I'd love to see it!

Well, Monday should bring some interesting news, and I'm sure I'm facing a big decision, thank God (seriously, thank God!) I have you all walking with me!

Hi everyone.  We met with my Dr. yesterday, the lumpectomy did not produce clear margins and more surgery is necessary; a re-excision would mean about 2 cm. additional tissue to be removed all the way around the area and she feels I have only about a 30% chance of have clean margins..not so good. 

The discovery of additional cancer in a site separate from the target site put this officially as multifocal and with the condition of the other tissue, the family history, the size of the mass removed and nuclear grade, there is really only one way to deal with this effectively and that is with a simple mastectomy.  This surgery is really the only way to be as sure as they can that they got it all; right now, there's just no way of knowing how much there is, how far it has spread and if any of it is invasive.

I guess that reconstruction immediately following surgery is optimum, but, honestly, Goshen is a long way go; I don't have enough leave time to deal with surgery and reconstruction; that's a lot to ask of Tom to drive there and back, there and back, so I think we're going to opt for reconstruction later up here.

There's not much more to it than that, surgery will be probably the Wednesday the 15th or 22nd of July, stay overnight in the hospital, stay overnight in the care house and we'll come home on Friday.  We have a consult with the plastic surgeon on Monday here in Lansing and we'll go from there.

I won't have radiation this way (which frankly, I'm okay with!) and if there is no invasion, I shouldn't have to have any chemo either (which I'm really okay with!)  I'm just going to be listing to the left for awhile :)

I am glad you now have a plan and I think you have chosen wisely.  Gilda Radner quote, Oh my I loved Gilda and just reread her book not to long ago when my sister was so ill.

I took care of a friend who had a double mastectomy with immediate  implants back a few years ago.  She had such a stong family history and when her lump was discovered she chose to have the double mast.  She is doing wonderful and no recurrence.   There are many great outcomes with the kind of surgery you have chosen so you know I will be right here praying and  sending you good vibes.

Yes I was on my knees Sunday and it was truly a beautiful mass with lots of music.  I prayed for you .

I admire your faith and your spirit, you are a wonderful and special person.

You show such courage and endless spirit that I am in awe of you. Sure, I know there has to be a lot going on inside you right now, but your ability to focus and act in the face of everything, and still keep a great attitude is so admirable. I jumped over to the GERD forum just to see if you had posted.

Yes, Gilda. Kitt - that was a great quote from her book. I interviewed for a job a few years back at one of the Gilda's Clubs that are around. You might check and see if there's any around you. There might even be a support group on the web, but then we have a great one here!

Thanks for the info and look what I found.

The first Gilda’s Club opened in New York City in 1995. Today, 21 clubhouses are operating, and 10 more are preparing to open their doors. Twin Cities is one of them. Gilda’s Club Twin Cities is working hard towards a projected opening in 2010. Please help us bring this amazing program to Minnesota.

I will be following this closely as I  would love to volunteer.
