Still burping after Nissen

Hi everyone!

I am still burping 1 month post surgery. Is this normal? I was supposed to have a full wrap and all I read about is the inability to burp. I don't seem to have a problem. I am seeing the surgeon on Thursday but thought I would ask to get some temporary piece of mind.

Hi Liser,
I was told by my surgeon that I wouldn't be able to burp after the surgery. I actually started burping a bit right away. The resident and another surgeon from the same office said that I may burp, so I wasn't too worried when it started. In the beginning, before my wrap had settled in, I even got some "heartburn" sensations, since the wrap was swollen and not fitting quite right. That resolved over time.

I definitely understand your worry. I worried, too! My surgeon was surprised that I could burp--I can't actually make myself burp, but my stomach burps itself. If my stomach is very full, it is less likely to burp itself and I get more bloating. You should be thankful you can burp, because without those burps you can get pretty bloated and it's uncomfortable (Gas-X works great for me).

So I don't think you need to worry one bit. From what I've read online, people who can burp have fewer discomforts and problems with the wrap than people who can't.
