Hello everyone, I am a 29 years old girl and My Nissen was 11/10/09. I'm here to talk about my surgery experience and to ask you some questions. My reflux disease was (and is) an atypical reflux symptoms. A particular acid reflux gas symptom was (and is) present in my esophagus and it crosses my face up to my ears. Anyone here with this acid reflux gas? After a Nissen how long I must wait to see a reduction of symptoms?
30 days? 60 days? 3 months? six months?

I had immediate cessation of reflux, can only burp a tiny bit. Maybe they didn't do a very tight wrap on you?

my Nissen was 11/10/09 in Milan, are now about 8 weeks after my surgery but my symptoms are all here. My doctor at IC Humanitas in Milan, says that my Nissen was perfectly executed but for my symptoms I have to wait 6 months!
is this true? All symptoms disappear in six months?
After a Nissen, how long you waited to see a firts reduction of symptoms?
30 days? 60 days? 3 months? six months?
I have all my symptoms, I feel my acid reflux gas still coming up in my face and ears.

Mine was much better right away with some "rebound" about the 2 or 3 week mark and then better again. I have had it done twice and neither time was told it would take 6 months to have the symptoms ease up.

Hello wonderful forum,
was two months ago my nissen. No symptoms reduction. My surgeon says nissen be evaluated after six months! When you could hear a reduction in symptoms? please help me. Can you throw up? I can burp and eat any food. May be my nissen too wide? I feel pain around my Nissen, even you after two months? This is a good nissen surgery or not?

Hey there, hello and from all I have read here you surgery does not appear to be following the general path of recovery that most of the members here have followed post op.


Is there a way for you to seek out the second opinion of another physician? 6 months seems like a long time before you would notice a decrease in your sx.

My symptoms of reflux and GERD were gone when I woke up from surgery. I have not had any symptoms come back but I have had to deal with other post op issues. Mostly due to a long recovery.

I have some problems swallowing thick foods like bananas and yogurt or anything else of that consistency. I don't eat bread but would imagine it would be hard to swallow too. I need to wash my food down with liquids between bites and more liquids when I start to feel full. I never get a full meal because I need to leave space for the liquid that I will have later, to wash the food down.

The area in between my 2 center cuts still feels tender and I can not sleep on my stomach yet, after 4 months.

I can not burp and imagine that I can not throw up ether.

By what you describe, I don't think your surgery was successful. You should seek help from a 3rd party, other than you specialist and surgeon, to get your wrap evaluated.

I hope you get the help you are seeking soon.

Rafael, my surgeon says that a Nissen is not a tap. If you can't eat all, you can't do burps your new nissen valve is too closed, my surgeon says it is unrealistic to think after a few hours outside surgery reflux disappears.
Nissen is a complex surgical procedure, our new valve must operate, open and close, making possible to do burps
If you can't do burps your new cardia nissen valve does not exist, your is only a new cap!

In this forum I read that after 8 weeks people is better 90% what you mean when you say 90% better: for your health after your surgery or 90% reduction in symptoms?

I ask to you only this, please:
How long after surgery to reduce your symptoms
if I eat a great quantity of nexium before my surgery after my surgery, If I have gerd, I will feel no symptoms.

before my surgery I take no nexium!!

So, please, Your Surgeons how long after surgery say pending a real disappearance of symptoms?

Nico, this surgery attempts to rebuild your Lower Esophageal Sphincter(L.E.S) by creating a seal again. Mine was very weak and damaged from the hernia I had, and had less than 1/2 the pressure of a normal one. To my understanding the wrap is a cap because the L.E.S is for ever damaged and it stays open, and that's when the GERD symptoms start. The wrap does not attempt to rebuild it or help it work again. The wrap is the best attempt to try and keep the food and acid where its supposed to be so that we do not get barrettes disease, and then Cancer. about 90% of the people who I have come across who have had the surgery, successfully, are not able burp or throw up ever again. My oldest brother is one of hose people.

I believe people say after 8 weeks they are at 80% from recovery. I and other people on this forum have experienced the GERD symptoms being gone after waking up from surgery. Others still have issues but they have not reported back or have not been told as to why that is. I know that for me, my most recent Endoscopy showed my having no sings of GERD any more after my surgery.

Now, there is a new surgery where they are installing a magnetic prosthesis around your L.E.S that acts like the one god designed. The Nissen is not like that.

I hope what I have written helps. It's information I have gathered from My doctors, members of this forum, and from personal experience with this surgery.

Rafael is pretty much right on. I have had 2 Nissens and I can burp with this one, but still cannot vomit. Unfortunately mine is a bit looser than needed and I have to take Prilosec once a day again. Much better than the 2 prevacids twice a day I was taking prior to surgery. My reflux symptoms were gone when I woke up from surgery. I don't understand your surgeon saying it takes 6 months to evaluate the wrap. I had an EGD done within 3 weeks of both surgeries. They can definitely tell after about 8 weeks if it is going to work or not. If you still are having symptoms past the 2 month mark it is time to get it evaluated. Sounds like something didn't go right. My first one wasn't done correctly and that's why I had the redo.

I know the surgeon in Milan that are testing this new surgery installing a magnetic prosthesis around L.E.S., not good news for you: this new surgery is tested on only few and this new surgery is not for everyone. No god will return your LES with a magnetic surgery. All best italian surgeons say surgeon it takes 6 months to evaluate the wrap. How you can't know this? Be able to burp after a Nissen surgery is very significant for a good surgery. If you can't burp you wrap is inoperative.
Which symptoms disappear after 24 hours from your surgery?
