Does Nasal cavity blockage caused by GERD?

hi. i have been suffering from GERD for a year now. i already stopped taking PPI meds since i had severe palpitations then. i switched in taking alternative medicines like chamomile tea, apple diet, turmeric drink before breakfast and sometimes i drink comfrey tea. late last year, i observed that my nasal passages are blocked causing me to a hard and deep breath. This started when the season changed. This is worsen at night, when the weather is cold and especially when im in an airconditioned place or vehicle. Is this nasal complication caused by GERD? Do you experience the same prob? Please advise what im going to do. i want to take vitamin C but unfortunately, GERD sufferers are not allowed to take ascorbic acid. i tried salt solution at home but its doesnt help.

Acid can flow as far as the sinuses, but it could be allergies. Have you seen an allergist?

Hi Marj,

Just wanted to let you know that I have similar issues with my nasal passages.  I went to an allergist a couple of years ago and she told me she thought I had LPR and needed to see a GI doctor.  Since I was already being treated for GERD with PPIs, I never bothered to go back to GI until now.  Perhaps an ENT doctor would be more beneficial, although everything I've read about LPR seems to indicate that all they do is put you on PPIs.  I'm starting to think, though, that if you (and me) have acid coming up as far as the sinuses then we probably need an ENT assessment to look at potential damage in the larynx (which I don't believe a normal upper endoscopy can do).

It's frustrating walking around with inflamed sinuses all day!  Hope you feel better soon.

I had the same trouble. I have a narrow face and small nostrils, and GERS. Since being diagnosed with GERS, I've had more trouble breathing at night. When I'm sitting or standing, I can breathe freely through both nostrils, but when I lay down, usually one side closes off entirely, or both close off most of the way. It's not caused by anything *in* there, it just feels like my sinuses are swelling up and closing off. I definitely think that this is caused by acid entering my sinuses through the pharynx, and irritating the lining there. The result: poor sleep and (so my wife tells me), snoring.

One thing that I've found greatly helps is using "Breathe Right" strips, or their generic alternative (Walgreen's, for example). I have to thoroughly wash my face every night before putting on the strip before going to bed, to allow the strip's adhesive to tightly bond to my skin, but the strip grips the outside of the nostrils and pulls them further open, allowing more air to pass. Indeed, I find I can't sleep without them anymore! Not that this is a bad thing; at least there aren't any side effects! But you may want to give them a try; they could help you breathe more freely at night.

I am replying to your blocked nasal passages.  My son is 5 and has Cystic Fibrosis and significant sinus disease.  He  had 2 sinus surgeries a few months ago to relieve his blocked sinuses which were severly infected and did have some polyps as well.    It was recommended that h e wash his sinuses to keep them clean and clear.   I also have allergies and asthma so I decided to do the same.  So we found a wonderful rinse in Nasopure at nasopure.com.   It is a natural salt that you mix with water and washes whatever might be up there out.  We tried other sprays and neti pots but they were not as easy for a 5 year old.  It is unbelievable what we wash out of his sinuses everyday and my son and I breathe and sleep a lot easier with clean sinuses.  Anyway this is a suggestion of how to wash out your blocked sinuses.  Good Luck!
