Hi Stacey,
You're almost there! Surgeons are variable in the limitations they place on their patients, and how much responsibility for food choices they're allowed. I'm sure this is because they've had experience with patients who get themselves into trouble with what they're trying to eat post surgery. Few surgeons require liquids for three weeks, but it's not unheard of. More require soft foods. My surgeon trusts his patients to follow his direction and make sensible food choices. He required that take small bites and eat only things that can be chewed to a liquid.
He warned that soft foods (like mashed potato) can actually cause trouble, while crispy/hard food (like crackers) can be chewed to a complete liquid easily. Bread is a no-no, but toast is easily chewed to a liquid.
Before long you'll be back to eating normally, Stacey! Hang in there. I wish I could help you with the liquids. I was all prepared for a liquid diet when I was put on soft the day after surgery, and solids at 5 days. All the broth, applesauce and squash I'd made ahead of time didn't need to be used.
My husband thinks I'm crazy, but I love squash bisque soup. (If you're near a Wegman's, they have it in a box.) I also used to eat other soups but leave the unchewable pieces behind. Just have a napkin close by!
Good luck, and happy eating!
Denise
