Hi

I have just come back home from having an endoscopy and I have to put everyones mind at ease. I was so scared but the specialist said it was painless and i would not remember what happened. This was the procedure:

I was given valium through an injection and also a throat spray I was also given a mouth guard. That was it!! I do not remember anything else and this happened to me 3 hours ago.

Please do not worry as you will not feel or remember a thing.

They gave me an injection through an IV and it was night-night in less than five seconds. :)

Hi! Same experience as the previous posters. Right after being sedated via an IV and the mouth guard was placed I blinked my eyes 4 times, by the fifth time I blinked and upon opening my eyes I was awake in the recovery room. Not bad at all. =)

Oh thank you for posting this. I am going Monday for my endoscopy and am scared to death. I am so anxious about it I can hardly stand it. This makes me feel somewhat better!

Seriously, you will not remember a thing. Before I went for the Endoscope, I specifically asked to have a general anaesetic but the surgeon refused saying they did not do that for this procedure. Because of this I was going to cancel the Endoscope but he reassured me that i would not feel a thing. HE WAS RIGHT!! All I remember is him saying he was going to inject me with a sedative and and to relax. The next thing I said was "when are you going to put the tube down my throat"? he said "I have already done it"

Please don't worry - I only wish I had joined this forum before I went in to have it done because like you I was petrified.

I hope you are right. I so badly want to be put completely under but I don't think they do that there either. I deal with anxiety and am so scared I will have a panic attack during the procedure! Are you seriously relaxed DURING the procedure to the point you are almost out?? UGH!! I just want to get it over with so badly and have to wait till Monday!

When I panic - I am unable to breath and I told the surgeon this and he did not seem worried I might as well have been under a full anaesetic cos I remember nothing. I know you probably think you will be different and it won't affect you but I bet you, you will be posting all good news on this forum when you return from your endoscope.

Thanks! You guys were right on! Had my endo yesterday and after he sprayed my throat he have me the meds in my IV and I was nighty-night! Next thing I knew I was in recovery and it was over. Feel so much better that it is over but feel stupid for worrying so, so much about it.

Anyone who is extremely fearful of the endoscopy procedure should inform their doctors of this. These docs have a great deal of experience working with all kinds of patients with various amounts of tolerance for these procedures. In addition, if you are just mildly sedated and show any signs of discomfort, they can add meds to your IV to put you out at any time.

My first endoscopy was with mild sedation, and I'm sure that if I showed signs of stress, my doc would have added meds to reduce my discomfort.

Nobody should worry about this procedure. That's wasted energy! Instead, be totally frank with your doctor and let them know exactly what your fears are. He/she will provide you with whatever sedative level you desire!

I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy on the same day.  My experience was much the same as others.  5 seconds and then out like a light.  It was the best sleep I've had in years!

Today I had a manometry test.  I was very concerned because in addition to GERD, I have asthma and I am very claustrophobic.  It wasn't as easy as the endoscopy, but it was not bad.  No pain, just some discomfort.  They put a gel numbing agent in your nostril and you sniff, this pretty much numbs your nostril and the soft palette.  I was breathing through my mouth which kept me from involuntarily swallowing.  Because I didn't swallow unless instructed the test took about 25 minutes start to finish.  I drove home and I'm fine.

I'm scheduled for the Nissen fundoplication on the 20th and that has me very nervous, but my health as been so bad, that it can only improve.  Any advice on healing from the fundoplication?

Kittehmom you will be fine. I've not had the wrap surgery so can't give you advice but someone will soon. I suggest starting your own thread with the subject advice wanted on fundoplication healing. There are great people on here who have had the surgery and will be able to help you.

Welcome Kittehmom,
I had the surgery back in December. Everyone recovers differently.
The main thing ideas are:
liquids for about three weeks, slowly add more solid foods (save breads, potatoes, and meat for last)
Chew very well
Small meals (1/2 cup a meal) about every two hours
Don't lift over 5 lbs for atleast 6 weeks, then increase weight slowly
Don't bend over or push things for about six weeks
Use a pillow on your stomach the first two weeks for coughing or you'll get sore

couchtater, thank you so much for the advice and the response.  I'm very scared but don't want to admit it to those around me.  My husband is so patient and has been such a blessing, but he has to be tired of listening to me.  I'm tired of listening to me!  I'm sure everyone here who has a chronic illness knows the feeling of not wanting to burden the people around them any more than necessary.  I haven't spoken of how I feel unless it's to a doctor (and they are all lheart), in a couple of years and knowing that there are others "out there" who have understand is very heartening.
