Hi everyone I am new to this.  I have had acid reflux for about 3 or 4 years that I know of.  There are a few times have woken up in the middle of the night thinking I was having a heart attack the pain was so bad.  I have been on 40mgs of omperazole and 300mgs of zantac a day for about the last 8 months its not really working it works enough just to get me by.  I have a constant burning in my chest most of the time.  Went to my Gastro about a month ago had a EGD done was diagnosed with GERD which I pretty much already new I had.  He has recommened me to have a nissen fundoplication done but only after I have a motility study done I was wondering if anyone has had one of these done and what it was like.

Anyone who has had the surgery has to have one of them before to determine how tight to do the wrap.
It's not the most pleasant of test, but it's extremely necessary.
1. You come in with a totally empty stomach.
2. They squirt a numbing gel up your nose and you're told to sniff hard so it numbs everything from upper sinuses to throat.
3. They give you a cup of water with a straw and tell you to drink as they feed a thin tubing with sensors on it through your nose down to your stomach. It hard to do. You will gag some depending on your gag reflex.
4.They lay you back on the bed and adjust the sensor some. Then tape it to your nose.
5. Now comes the tricky part. You have to swallow ten perfect swallows of water on the doctor's cue.
If you follow the doctor's directions you'll be done in less than 15 minutes. If you fight it takes longer. >:(
I went through it okay. My only problem I had no idea what the test was and the doctor didn't tell me what was going to happen. I wish I had found this forum before the test and I'd been better prepared for it.

I had my motility study today it was not painful just uncomfortable to about 25 mins. The nurse said she thought my motility was good but she was not supposed to tell me that because the doctor has to read it first. My throat and nose still feel funny from having the cathater stuck in it but otherwise not to bad.

Wish both of mine were only 10 swallows. My second one was 10 with saline instead of tap water and 10 with some type of gel. I had plain water the first time and I much prefer it to saline. I am not a big fan of salt. Also I only had the back of my throat sprayed for the first one I had done, but did have the lidocaine the second time.

She did num the back of my throat and put some kind of jell up my nose. It did take me more than ten swallows of water I kept choking and coughing on the first ones she was giving me so she pulled the tube back out sat me up further and repositioned it then I did ok and was done a few minutes later. Hope not to have to have it done again. Still waiting for my doctor to call with the results so I can set up an appointment with the surgeon.

I had this test done 2 weeks ago. I was told that it would show if I had two swallowing conditions that would be dangerous to have surgery with. As long as this test came out negative I would still be a good canidate for surgery. It was very uncomfortable, but I got through by keeping my head forward and relaxing. (Go to your happy place). Take deep breaths and try to relax. Only swallow when told and it goes fast. When they pulled the thin tube out it was a little painful in my sinuses, but was fine within a short amount of time. And back to work the same afternoon.

Right now I have the probe for the Bravo in. Not as simple as I had thought. The proceedure was easy and no problem, but now each swallow feels like a rough ball just above my stomach. However it is only 48 hours, I'll be done by noon tomorrow!

I asked my doctor if I needed to have the 24 hour p.h. test done and he said no that the positive biopsies from the endoscope were enough. He also said that he had a patient and it got stuck and they had to go in and remove it so he did not want me to have to go through that. I am just waiting for the results of my motility study and then he will schedule me with the surgeon.

Finally got the results back from my motility study a week later. My Gastro said I am a good canidate for surgery and I have a consult with the surgeon on thursday. Any help with questions I should ask would be much appreciated.

Hi Ritch,

Good luck with the surgery if you decide to get it, but I'm thinking maybe your problem is the medication. I had bad luck with omeprazole and felt constant pain like you. I felt much better after switching to Prevacid 24HR. You can buy that over the counter without a prescription in 15 mg capsules. I take 60mg a day and since it is timed release, my pain level from reflux decreased greatly. You might want to give that a try before you go under the knife.

I have been on several types of medication prevacid being one I have also used kapidex which is a new time released medication not much luck with either one.

Met with the surgeon today they are supposed to schedule me for a barium swallow and surgery should find out when in the next couple of days.

A motility study is also called a manometry study. They instert a small tube with sensors on it trough your nose down your throat. Once in place they have take small sips of water, usually ten times, to get a reading of how well your esophagus is working. It's not the most comfortable test, but necessary if you are having GERD issues and especially if you are looking toward surgery.

Have Barium swallow tomorrow morning not really looking forward to it but cannot be near as bad as the motility study. I have been scheduled for surgery on Oct. 4th. The surgeon I am using is very popular in the Kansas City Metro area so he is very busy this was his first open day for surgery.
He did spend quite a bit of time talking to me about the surgery and answering any questions I had I feel very comfortable using him.

The barium swallow test isn't hard at all. The hardest part is not burping when they have you roll on the table.

You're given a thick chalky drink to drink while they film you drinking it. They then lay the table back with you on it and ask you to drink laying down. They give you a fizzy drink to gas up your stomach and have you roll over and over. If you burp they have to give you more fizzy drink. :P

Just remember to take a laxative after you get home or you'll feel like rocks are moving through your bowels.
