Has anyone here found PPI's caused acid reflux problems?

Hey everyone! I've had stomach health problems since July last year now and basically feel at a loose end, and just don't know what to do anymore :(

Basically, I've experienced intense nausea, bloating/fullness to the point where I have to force myself to eat every day. It keeps me awake at night sometimes, I don't have a social life anymore, I don't feel like I can go anywhere anymore as I'm often so worried about throwing up and being sick. Basically, this has just made my life hell.

I don't know if I'm in the wrong forum or not, if this isn't an appropriate place for me to post this, then I'm sorry, maybe someone has some suggestions? But anyway, my GP started me off on PPI medication (I took Omperazole, Lansoprazole, Esomperazole) as well as domperidone. Well whilst being on PPI's, they basically seemed to be causing me to have acid problems. Loads of horrible reflux, acid coming up my throat/oesophagus. After 12 months on these meds, I took myself off them because they didn't seem to be getting rid of my acid trouble and I had a gastroscopy which came back as normal. My gastro wants me to go back on them because he thinks the indigestion/bloating is down to having excess stomach acid, but I just don't feel as convinced. It doesn't feel like there's too much stomach acid at all, but if anything, too little! The only time I have had acid trouble is when being on PPI's. In a weird way, I think they made me feel more sick.

I might start a gluten free diet next, I think that's my next step in trying to get well!

Now I'm not saying PPI's don't help anyone, maybe they're just not right for me, and are not helping my condition.

After 15 months of going back and forth to my doctor, they still haven't really reached a firm diagnosis. I've had IBS mentionned, which I don't feel like that's what this is as I don't have much bowel trouble. I think it could be gastroparesis, although he said it's part of the same thing as IBS, although pretty sure it's a separate condition.

Anyway, just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience/problem. Would really appreciate any help!

I've had the same problems before and after both nissens. Seems like you just wrote about my life, being stuck at home with the fear of being sick because it gets so bad. It's been a little over two years with no improvement. My GI is pretty stumped since all of my tests come back normal. I'm having a lactose intolerance test and a bacteria overgrowth test done in the next two weeks. It's so hard to live with and nobody really understands unless they have been there. I wish I had better news for you but I'm on the same boat.

yep I feel I got worse taking ppis. I have looked a lot on the internet and there is not to many of us around that say they get worse taking ppis.bit I did . I thought the ppis caused me to have more reflux. what to do about it??????? ......if you find the answer please let me know.

I feel better when I lay down ( upright reflux)
and I feel better when i exercise.

Hmmm...yeah I was hoping someone might have the answers. It sure is tough sometimes isn't it! :( I'm going to try and go gluten free and see if that helps. If not, maybe giving up the lactose?

I really hope we all get answers soon. When I'm not on PPI's, it's just the bloating, indigestion I get, I have no acid trouble so I don't understand why my doctors are so keen on getting me back on them, when I know they are making me feel more sick. I have some days when I'm a little better, still working out my trigger foods. All the nice foods like cakes, biscuits are generally a no no now.

If I find answers, I will let you all know anyway!

Ive to be honest, when I started getting "stomach" issues in may 09 i was never on PPI's - then I went to ent who saw a tiny tiny amount of acid in my throat.

He suggested that I went on Omperazole 15mg which i did....ever since that date ive gone through the main 3 ppis and am on nexium 40mg these days !!

Where as in may 09 i had virtually no acid, no i wake up with it coating my tongue each morning.  Certainly makes me wonder!!

Yeah Matt, I'd be careful! I started off on 20mg of omeprasole, then 20mg of lansoprasole, then 40mg of nexium, then 40mg of omeprasole again. None of them worked, and just made me more sick, the stronger the strength I used the more ill they made me and gave me more problems. I'll never touch PPI's again!
