Help! Tonight I was so hungry and I couldn't stop myself from eating too much dinner. The pain in my esophagus is awful. I keep burping but it doesn't take it away -- it's like the burp is stuck there. I threw up a little saliva (I think I read that others did the same). Is there anything to do but just wait and get through it? Oh I will be so much more careful again. This is terrible!

There isn't much you can do but wait. Do NOT make yourself try to vomit!!!!! I did try to vomit, not trying to, after taking a pain med that I reacted to badly. It caused my wrap to migrate, and now I may have to have a re-do.

If you have pain after this calms down, and it will, you need to get a barium swallow to check on the wrap and see if you've re-herniated.

I keep some paregoric on hand to prevent vomiting, when it's too late for Zofran. It stops the spasms instantly. (It works on intractable coughing too.

Take some strong pain medicine for the pain and place a heating pad on your chest. It may help some.

It didn't last long, thank goodness and I didn't throw up too much. I know that that is dangerous. Thanks for the info. I will be a lot more careful from now on. Ugh!

Hi Hamsa,
I always find coating my esophagus and stomach with Maalox gives me a lot of relief.

From what I understand the easiest way to check on your wrap is to have your doctor schedule an esophagram (x-ray). There is no prep and while the procedure is being done you can watch how the wrap reacts as you swallow some liquid.

I am sure you will be hearing from some of our wrapped members re your question.

Hi Hamsa,
Don't panic! The odds are against anything happening to your wrap with one small incident like the one you described. Some people who have had the surgery can actually vomit without a problem. Please don't worry yourself.

I don't know how long ago you had the surgery, but really--you'll have to just continue to heal and allow your upper GI tract to adjust. I was told by my resident/doctor that the repair is quite strong and within a few days of healing it is very resistant to damage.

Hamsa - a good way to avoid this in the future is to measure your food.
I measure out a cup of whatever I'd like to eat - and when it's gone, you're done if you can even eat all of it.
If you're prone to overeating to begin with it might help you to stop doing that.....
Of course, sometimes people just get carried away but the pain from doing so is just not worth it right after fundoplasty.

I feel you! I made that mistake myself once and since then I actually measure it so it won't happen again.
That pain was awful, wasn't it? lol
Here's to better days! They ARE coming! You're not that far behind me and these days, I feel great!
I'm weak but I feel like ME again - only 30lbs less of me! Yay!

I just did that a couple weeks ago and I posted about it.

Lesson learned the hard way!! I have to stop eating BEFORE I get the full feeling. I can only eat a half of a sandwich because if I eat the whole thing, I pay dearly.

I have to take a GAS X pill and lay down for the night. The only thing that helps me is to take the gas pill and go to bed.

I seem to get hit with that for dinner only. Lunch I have no problem.

I wished I had pain pills for when this happens because I get anxiety symptoms it seems, my heart races and I am light headed and out of breath.

Heating pad helps relax the spasms.
