Gastritis

On new years eve, I decided to have a little binge drinking fest. I mainly had a decent amount of tequila. I have only drank alcohol a few times before this, mainly beer. I puked a few times that night, and I felt horrible the next day which I contributed to the hangover. I noticed for the next week that I felt complete awful. I had a lot of bloating, cramps, gas, and burning in my upper abdomen. I eventually had an endoscopy done on January 24th. My esophagus and duodenum were normal. For my stomach, it said that I have "localized erythema of the mucosa with no bleeding was noted in the antrum. These findings are compatible with gastritis." They also took biopsies for H Pylori and Celiac Disease. Those both turned out to be negative. They said everything looked pretty good. I have been pretty miserable for the past month. I've been on Nexium 40mg once a day for about 2 weeks. Can one night of drinking really cause this? I have never had any symptoms of this before new years eve. I also have never had GERD or anything like that. So, I'm guessing it's acute? Does acute gastritis really last this long though? How long does it typically take to heal?

Hello and welcome to HealingWell. 

Gastritis usually develops when your stomach's protective layer becomes weakened or damaged. A mucus-lined barrier protects the walls of your stomach from the acids that help digest your food. Weaknesses in the barrier allow your digestive juices to damage and inflame your stomach lining.

Alcohol can irritate and erode your stomach lining, which makes your stomach more vulnerable to digestive juices. I am wondering if you normally drink alcohol prior to the New Year's Eve binge? Also are you a smoker ?

How long the effects last depends on what is causing the gastritis. Perhaps it is time to revisit your GI physician.

I am 62 years old and developed the exact problems you have stated and the same erthema or gastritus you have mentioned. I am on Nexium twice a day and have been for almost two months. I am much better. but still have the lump in the throat problem and the anxiety problems have gone away. If I feel them coming on I take a zannax pill and that pretty much stops the attacks.

My doctor performed the Bravo test where a capsule which transmits acid levels to a receiver worn on my belt. The capsule is attached by suction to the esophogus about 1 and 3/4 inch above the les in my stomach. He also looked at the stomach lining and found what you had also.

They also took biopsies of tissue in the stomach area and have not heard back about the results yet. Will find out next monday.

I am still on nexium twice a day. I am eating more stuff now ,but still scared to eat tomato sauce and pizza. Before i went on the nexium. I would be in serious heartburn mode if I ate them.

I still can feel my stomach pain thru to my back , but it is getting less and less as I stay on the nexium.

Hey all, just joining up.

Recently I've been through a lot of pain. And a lot of tests. They tell me it may be gastritis, which reading everything online is very disheartening since it seems to last forever and the pain is terrible. I started having pain in my right lung. The doctor said I probably had pleurisy and gave me a non-steroid anti-inflammation drug called indomethicin, which I took for a week. The drug gave me asthma like symptoms less than a week later I was experiencing severe nausea, and pain in my right side. The lung pain is still there, but I did stop taking those meds. Now they have me on something called salsalate, which helps sometimes and other times not at all. The nausea is terrible, but I can never thow up. I can't eat anything either as it makes it worse.

Do you think this is from the first medicine? When I stopped the first medicine earlier this week they told me to take tylenol and asprin for the pain so I did and that may have made it worse. Is the new medicine going to make the problem even worse? I've had an ultra sound and a lot of blood tests which are all clear. I don't know if I can live with this for a long time. A week and I'm already hurting bad enough to wanna die.

I'm going in tomorrow to see if I can get tested for the bacteria and maybe get an endoscopy. I just want this all to end.

Found out online that the salsalate can actually make gastritis worse. so something else to bring up to the doc today. Sigh.

Hey..i just came across this as i am going through similar problems/symptoms.
I am 21 years old and not a heavy drinker. I would drink socially 3-4 beers maybe once or twice a month. In july i had a night of binge drinking (6 jack daniels glasses on the rocks) for two days after i had upper abdominal pain and it went away. 2 weeks after i took antibiotics for a supposed respiratory infection and a fever and the pain came back. Since then it has been on and off. It will come and stay for a few days and go away for maybe a week. I have had 2 blood testsand everything is normal including liver and pancreas. I had an endoscopy and biopsy and everything is good. Doc said maybe at the most mild inflamattion of stomach.
I had an ultrasound and that was negative as well.
The pain is in the center of the upper abdomen, maybe 3 inches below ribcage.
Have you found anything as to what this might be?

I had the TIF which eliminated most of my reflux but am still having pain like you describe. My doctor thinks that it is gastritis. Yours may also be gastritis.

Thank you for your reply. Wouldnt gastritis have show in the endoscopy? If it is gastritis ..how long until it heals?

Hi VNJ, I know this is an old thread, but I am quite relieved to find someone with the same problem I've been struggling with the last few months! I was perfectly healthy, ran about five miles on an empty stomach, then drank a lot on an empty stomach and got a LOT of pain and sickness in my stomach. The problem really started instantaneously. Been having the same problems ever since! Lost a lot of weight, did every test, got the same result on my endoscopy, thought I had gastritis, then was told that I didn't. I can only conclude that drinking injured my stomach in some odd way, even though the doctors seem to think it's impossible. Have used the phrases "could one session of drinking" and "too much of a coincidence" many, many times! Anyway, if it happened to both of us is certainly possible. Am wondering if you're feeling any better? Did you ever find out what the problem is? I really hope you're feeling better.

Raw onions are harsh on the stomach, also acidic (tomatoes on tacos or burger) and spicy food can irritate the stomach. These can cause gastritis. I've had gastritis for 3 years and I just have to avoid things I love. Alcohol, soda, anything spicy or fatty or acidic. Losing weight can help if you have gerd.

Hello all!

I was diagnosed with very minor gastritis last month after an endoscopy. Biopsy and ultrasound were negative. I first noticed it after eating some papa Johns spicy sausage pizza and smoking Marijuana mid-december. I am a heavy Marijuana smoker I will admit and have smoked continously for the past 5+ years, but never cigs. That whole week something didn't feel quite right so I thought it was my heart. Went to my primary who did an EKG which was negative. The0n on a Friday I ate a lot of spicy sushi and within an hour I felt immediate pressure building right below my breastbone to the point t where I had to stay moving. I would then get acid reflux while sleeping. I was prescribed Nexium which I was taking for the past 8 weeks.

It's weird because I don't really get any extreme pain anymore, just a lot of gas moving around everywhere which freaks me out because I still think it's other organs causing the problem. No more reflux during the night though. Still lot of burps, although i feel the nexium prevents the burps. the only time I get pain is when I try to smoke Marijuana and I get a pressure/burning sensation right between my pecs. It starts 10mins after a hit and lasts a few hours.

Recently, I've been feeling weird while on nexium. Lots of bloating and I feel a much heavier hearbeat. Also, when I was done eating last night and stood up I felt a couple palpations with a double beat and then a pause. Probably 4 of them and then back to a normal beat, but still heavy. I've been trying to wean off the nexium so I took 20mg in the am and 150mg of Zantac before dinner. Today is my first day off nexium and I only took 150mg Zantac before lunch. I workout 7 days a week and don't drink, just smoke Marijuana no cigs but not recently because of the pain.

Does anyone have any similar reactions to nexium? Can Marijuana smoke cause gastritis?
