irregular z line = barrets?

Hi everyone,

If I had an endoscopy that showed an irregular z line and a biopsy was taken (results not known yet), does that mean I have barrets? Could an irregular z line be caused by anything else and not be barrets?

It could mean a hernia is there. Don't freak out yet. Try to be patience in waiting for the biopsy results.

thanks Joy. I took a look at my first ever endoscopy (from June 2008), and can make a rough outline of the same z-line. Since then I have had 2 more and no Barrets. So does that mean that it probably isn't Barrets? I mean, roughly the same line existed before (I can't tell if it is the exact same line due to the quality and size of the pictures...but I can note key features of it (it is very irregular))

This is a quote from the AAFP newsletter(vol 69, no. 9/May 1. 2004):

"The line at which the columnar epithelium transitions to the squamous epithelium (i.e., the squamocolumnar junction) is known as the Z-line. Normally, the Z-line corresponds to the gastroesophageal junction. In patients with Barrett’s esophagus, the columnar epithelium extends proximally up the esophagus."

The Z-line can also be irregular if a hiatial hernia is present.

Barrets was just starting to creep up my esophagus and GERD was getting worse.

Pills did nothing to help and side affects were driving me crazy.

I have great hopes this will cure my problems.

Hello all, I am new  to this forum stuff.  but i have been ill for several months, acid reflux and indigestion after even small meals.  I had a colonoscopy and the other one...scope in the throat.  several biopsy but no results for prob two weeks.  the doc mentioned an irregular z line and biopsied for poss barretts.  there was also some erthymatous (spell) mucosa in the lower colon.  I have noticed an unusual fatigue from day to day.  any  thoughts?  thanks tuca
