pain like spasms 5 weeks since wrap

I feel pretty good for the most part since my surgery on Feb 9th...

One thing though, I am getting painful spasms every once in a while in my esohagus.... I described it to my husband as feeling almost like brain freeze but in my throat...

Please tell me this is normal healing process :-) how long should I expect it for ?

Congratulations on your recovery so far.  Other things can cause spasms and I am wondering if your Dr. checked your Gallbladder ? 

I have not had the surgery but I know other members will be along shortly to address your concerns.

Thanks Kitt I did have my gallbladder checked last year it was fine ....this pain comes right up my esophagus so I am pretty sure its surgery related,,, I just hope its normal :-)

had mine done 2 days ahead of you. I also had spasms. Very painful! I had a barium swallow done today.
Everything looks good.
Eating too much and/or too quickly seems to be the problem. Told to advance diet slowly.

Thank you so much Peggy...I will try to slow it down on my eating as well.... Like I said I feel pretty good otherwise and I guess its just making me move along a bit quicker than I should be doing ...thank you thank you thank you :-)

I too have had and, sometimes still do have the same symptom and it does come from eating too much and/or too quickly. I'm 7 weeks post op. It seems that some people do not have the stop valve to indicate they have eatin enough.

Spike that's what's happening here to I guess I have heard people can only eat a 1/4 cup of things and I can eat a whole bowl LOL I am gonna slow down for sure because those spasms hurt like heck !!! Thanks so much to all of you for responding :-)

I HATED the spasms!!

This took almost a year to stop happening for me. I found that I couldn't drink anything while I was eating, I had to wait until I was done eating and then take small sips.

Today, a year later, I can take small sips while I am eating. I also noticed that I have to use warm water to take my thyroid medicine or take it with my morning coffee because sometimes I will spasm. Something about cold fluids doesn't agree with my esophagus sometimes.

This will pass but I can say, after a year is when you will feel normal again.

Glad to hear that your healing has gone well!

I had my surgery in February 2009, and it took me a while to recall spasms, but yes indeed...I definitely had them.

For me it was when I didn't chew my food to a complete liquid, or ate something that didn't chew well. It would stick at the wrap, or have difficulty going through. I remember one time in particular, when I'd eaten a (believe it or not) cherry tomato, and thought I'd chewed it enough. OUCH!

Having a cup of tea handy is your best bet. I always try to remember to have water nearby. No ice! That day, I tried to wash things through with ice water (we were at a restaurant) and the spasms were horrible.

So yes. Spasms are common, I think (especially judging from your responses here). They don't last forever, but you need to eat very carefully to keep them at bay.

Oh my, I am not looking forward to a year of these ....if mine lasted anymore than the 15-30 seconds they do I would probably end up at the ER the pain goes strAit up to my jaw I am thinking it would be close to heart attack pain..I just had my heart check a few months ago and the cArdioligist thinks I am fine I did show a blockage but he thinks its a false positive...and this pain is new since my surgery
It seem to come on when I am hungry or my pain meds for my shoulder wear off ( iam getting surgery for that next week) I do not like it not one bit :-)
