Hi my name is Bob from New Jersey. I have suffered with GERD for about 10 years now, Im 70 years old. My symptoms wake me up at night and make days miserable. I had a cAT scan and am told that part of my stomach is in my chest. I am contimplating Nissen Fundoplication laporoscopically...after a lot of research. I know that my best chances are with the best surgeon I can find in New Yor City or New Jersy. Has anyone had good experience with Dr Joshua Sonnet at Columbia? Dr Frank Borao at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch? Would appreciate your advice.

Welcome to the Forum. I looked at the website for your Dr. but I cannot give you any opinion.

I am wondering if you have a GI Physician or if you have ever had a gastroscopy and other tests ?

You may want to get a second opinion just to gather all the info before you make your decision.

Thanks so much for your reply. My cAT scan shows part of my stomach in my chest cavity. i will need another endoscopy and upper gi series but don't know where to go for the work up and operation.

Hi Bob,
Do you have a good GI doc? That would be a good place to start. Living so close to a big city like NY you should have a wide range of very experienced surgeons to choose from.

When you choose a surgeon, it should be someone who specializes in this type of surgery. You should try to find someone who had done upwards of 1,000 procedures. As I said, in NYC this should be easy to accomplish.

A good GI doc in the area should be able to refer you to someone who knows what they're doing.

I live way upstate, so I can't help you with names. I know that others here have had surgery in NYC. Hopefully someone will be by soon to share their experience.

Hey Bob,
I met with Dr. Joshua Sonnett 2 months ago. I met with him because a colleagues friend had a very severe case of gerd and barretts. Since he used him he his in tip top shape.
I went to interview Dr. Sonnett and let me tell you he is more than qualified. Do you know he performs the Nissen procedure approx. 4 a day. He has been doing them for years and lost count after 1000. My friend had his procedure done 2 years ago and can eat anything he wants. The only thing he cannot consume is carbonated drinks.
I hope to have my surgery with him in 2012 because I have to change insurance policies. The health coverage I have at the present time his office does not use.
I would reccommend scheduling an appointment just to talk to him. I paid out of pocket to just talk to him and he made me feel very confident that I can get over my condition.

Hi Bob,
Part of your stomach in your chest creates a situation that requires the surgery. You're so lucky to live near a large metropolitan center with so many excellent surgeons and hospitals. Many travel to the NYC area for treatment.
It sounds like Dr. Sonnet is exactly the right kind of surgeon to do the job.

Track , How were your new scope results concerning your Barretts? Any changes good or bad? I got scoped today and the Dr. Found a 4cm hernia and some atypical cells. He said he's not at all worried about cancer, but that it might be Barretts. So i'm freaking out a little. Supposed to get biopsy results back tomorrow or Friday. Geez. Anybody had any success with the strawberry therapy? Brian

I have had (2) 5mm segments of barretts for the last 5 years. However this year when I received my annual surveillance they found a 3rd segment, 5mm. So now I have 1cm total of barretts, good news its non dysplastic. The fact that I grew a new segment and my reflux symptoms are getting worst I am making a move to relieve all my porblems through surgery. I have waited as long as I could but I am ready now. Im fearfull of it getting worst and progressing to cancer. I understand that I may have the nightmare that some nissen folks have here on this forum but I also feel that I have found a great surgeon and I will have to take a leap of faith.
