How to select an expert surgeon for Nissen Fundo

Hi Friends,

I am at a stage where i might have to do a Nissen Fundo, not right away but possibly in the near future.  My insurance is currently with HMO Kaiser and I am in the LOS ANGELES area.   Can you advice how to go about selecting the best possible surgeon?   If you already know of any good names,  i will appreciate that.

Go to the listing of the American Gastrologist Association you can find a list of baratric surgeons in your area. Baratric surgeons are usually the best doctors for the Nissen.

ok, i will check that. But how do i know that a doctor has perfomed 1000+ Nissen, other than asking him ?

I am with Kaiser in Northern Ca. I talked to the surgeon my GI referred me too. I asked her a million questions about her training and experience. Then I made an appointment for a 2nd opinion with the dr. who trained her. He ended up coming to my facility to assist the first dr. It was great and I still e-mail the 1st doc. Kaiser encourages 2nd and 3rd opinions. You won't know what you want to know unless you ask.

Ask your gastroenterologist to recommend who has the best record for success.

I would look for (went to) a cardio-thoracic surgeon in a big university hospital. It sounds like hearts only, but the thoracic surgeons are the ones you want wandering around in your mediastinum (look it up).

I asked who would actually be doing the surgery, since it was a teaching hospital. The head doc did all the tough parts, but he has a really good staff I have also learned to trust. The team has done MANY thousands of these surgeries.

Thanks Peg. I will start with with my GI at Kaiser. Will be taking a 2nd opinion also when the time comes
