I'm very thankful for having found this site. I am scheduled to have my surgery on Aug 1. I have a paraesophageal hernia with about half my stomach pushed up into my chest cavity and slightly twisted. I experience a lot of pain, sometimes lasting for hours, after eating more than just a small portion, since stomach expansion is inhibitied. I have had GERD and a hiatal hernia for over 10 years, and a narrowed esophogus, which has had to be dilated every year or two. I have been on Omeprazole (Prilosec) for years, although unlike most with GERD, I have not ever really suffered any significant heartburn type symptoms, even before Prilosec.
After reading other posting threads, I am exteremly concerned about post operative recovery now. My surgeon, one of the leading ones in this type of procedure in the large metropolitan area where I live, told me about three weeks of soft food diet post-op and that I would likely experience bloating and extra flatulence since I won't be able to burp. He said it would be about 10 days before I could return to work. (I have a desk type job and work virtually from home quite a bit)
I have a lot more questions now after reading other posts. I walk 45 minutes a day, how soon will I be able to resume this? It sounds from other postings that it's going to be a lot more significant than just "soft food diet for three weeks". It does not sound like I will be able to tolerate normal food for quite a while, listening to other posts. Do soft foods include things like pudding or yogurt, ice cream? Some have said that dairy products didn't sit well with them. I could stand to lose weight and I've already been working on it, so that sounds like one positive experience out of all of this. But I'm wondering if the cure is worse than my current condition. I wouid appreciate any feedback and comments any of you out there might have. Thanks
Gregg
