It is an "implant" basically. A ring of magnetic beads (the "device" to be implanted) - are placed around the LES area (it is laparoscopically procedure - meaning they don't cut you
open but use a few holes in the abdomen to guide the instruments and beads in). The magnetic attraction causes the LES to remain closed and the force of the food
opens it on its way down.
Early results are encouraging. Most importantly, it is reversible.
However, since it is so new, it is not even available everywhere yet - only in the EU countries and only England, Germany and Italy have clinics that are offering it as of today. FDA (in the US) are still going over the trial results etc. to decide whether or not to approve it.
Since you are in Canada, you might be able to go to these clinics in EU and get this surgery - but these clinics are explicitly prohibited to offer / promote it to the US citizens since this is pending FDA approval here in the US.
