Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has had side effects on nexium related to digestion. I've been on nexium for about three months now and it has really helped (though not totally eliminated) my gerd symptoms.

I have a hiatus hernia which has caused me a lot of misery for the last 18 months and I'm grateful for the break from the horrible heartburn and related symptoms. That being said, it seems that I've traded upper GI problems for lower GI problems.

I've looked up the side effects of nexium online and have found that what I'm experiencing is listed but I was also hoping to touch base with someone else who has had the same experience.

Hi Kitt,

Thanks for the reply. I have been dealing with constipation (not something that used to be an issue for me before all this started), gas, cramping and a feeling of pressure in the lower part of my bowel.

I'm not sure if this could be IBS or what but I'm clearly not digesting the way I used to.

I would appreciate knowing if anyone else has had similar problems that they have linked to nexium and/or gerd.

Have you tied to up your fluid intake? Sometimes meds will cause you to need more fluids to stay hydrated.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for getting back to me. I am increasing my water intake and trying changing my diet (wheat seems to be bothering me a lot now). I'll see if a few weeks of this regime helps.

I've been reading some disturbing articles on ppi's and digestion problems and that has lead to my question.

Hi Grace,
A lot of people find DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated licorice) is helpful with their GERD symptoms (to varying degrees). I find it soothing. It does seem to have a natural laxative effect also (I have to be careful how much I take!), so maybe there's a way for you to kill two birds with one stone as it were.......? Worth a trial.

It's also possible your ppi is affecting your digestion of fibre and slowing things down to much - you may need to experiment as to whether you need more fibre (like bran), less fibre (less bran!) or different fibre (e.g. less wheat, more oats and fruit and veg).

If you're not able to resolve it with licorice or dietary adjustment, do get back to your doctor to see what they can do to help.

PS: We have a product in the UK called "Califig" which relieves constipation (it's based on syrup of figs). Obviously need to be careful with the use of laxatives and discuss it with your doctor, but you may find a little licorice goes a long way...........

I have heard of DGL and I've already gone off of the nexium so I'll see what happens and try various things.

I've already discovered the old prune remedy. I can't stand them but I think they've helped a lot in the past few days.

You're welcome. Watch out for acid rebound if you've stopped your ppi! If it's a problem your doctor should be able to help you reduce your dose gradually.
