Hi there. Sorry things are not improving. I am finally able to go back to a semi normal diet but it's not easy. When do you see your dr again? I would insist on another appt with your surgeon! You have a right to get checked out again and just make sure. Things are healing the way they should be. It's for yOur peace of mind. Also not sleeping isn't helping the recovery at all. Maybe you can talk to your. Dr about that too

Thanks for your reply.  What does semi normal diet mean. Give me an idea. I am eating but small amounts and everything is whipped or very smooth. Any ideas of what you are eating may help me.

I see the surgeon Jan 11th.   I am seeing my PCP tomorrow to see

if she can help me with the sleeping. Maybe she can give me a presciption to help the sleeping.

I can eat most regular foods now. Chicken, pastas,soft veggies, cheeses, etc. I'm sorry your having a difficult time. It will get better

 Do you chew to a liquid or not?  I tried it on a cracker but

somehow it does not get to a liquid.

Sounds like you are way ahead of me. I just cannot seem to get

anything down unless it is smooth. Maybe I will try to chew something tomorrow and see if it will go down.

How is the pain you had ..better now?

Have you tried doing pastas and smooth food items that have no gluten in them ? They can be easier to digest. Even dairy free milk like almond milk and rice milk can digest easier do may be easier for you to eat.

I had trouble with liquids. I couldn't get them down. They'd gurgle and upset my esophagus. I thought stuff was getting stuck. Then it would hit my stomach and I'd get bloated and nauseated. However that doesn't happen to everyone. I just needed something a little heavier to go through my wrap

Always check with your dr first b4 making any changes though.

Talk to your dr about it. See what he recommends. Also always take small sips of water or a liquid with each bite. That should help get foods down better. Have you even tried things like pudding or yogurt?

I had a hard time getting back to this message. I wonder if the forum was having computer problems.  It took me a hour to get through

I not sure what to tell her she is my PCP. I am just going to see if she
can give me something to help sleep. I did not sleep last night at all and that is tough.

What do you eat in the morning?  I am doing a small amount of

cream wheat and insure.  Now that you can chew what would you eat.

Goodmorning.

Any idea how I can do some eggs not scrambled. I did ok yesterday on

a scramble runny egg but did not much of it.  I was trying to think of

a different way to cook the eggs.

Nancy do you eat eggs if so how are you doing them.

Sorry jean. I dnt really eat eggs. In the mornings I eat hot rice cereal mostly. I can chew pretty much anything now. It's gonna be a matter of trial and error for you my friend. Try like a cream soup ( butternut squash or mushroom) that has no chunks in it?

For me it was very soft veggies and Mac and cheese. I could only do a few bites at a time but I did it. Keep in mind my surgeons suggestions for me may be very different than the ones your dr recommended to you. Everyone's different. My dr wanted me on full liquids by day 5 ( pudding, cream soups, etc). He told me it would help me heal better but to certainly not overdo it and step back to clear liquids if I needed to. He then said I could go back to a regular diet around 3 weeks but to take it slow, chew completely and lots of water. He believed the body doesn't heal without nourishment to help it along. I always added whole veggies to my clear liquids and cream soups to add more nutrients. Of course I took them out before I had my soup to eat

Your ginna get there. One step at a time. However if your worried, you should see your dr sooner or at least talk to him on the phone for advice

Went to pcp but not much help.  Gave me Rx in pills for sleeping no liquid available. Going to crush them and mix with applesauce. Hope it works.

No other advice on food was given. Not much help at all.
Guess you are right kind of have to just try something and see if it goes through.

What a dilemia for sure.  I wish I knew what to try. Any advice is

Jean, I'm so sorry you are having so many problems. Maybe, if you get more sleep, you will heal more quickly and feel more relaxed and this will help the whole process. I hope so. Sending you healing thoughts!

I wish I could sleep and eat.

I did not get any sleep. The rx did not work. Not sure what to do.

Still not eating any solids with chewing.  Just do not know

what to do. I need food to keep me going but just do not know

what to make and eat

Hello Needs some help

I have tried to chew to liquid and it just does not happen.


What am I doing wrong. I must started eating soft foods but

I just do not know what foods. 

Please let me know what you ate to start with. I know from reading the other treads that some folks have the same trouble. But they

do start eating. 
 
Any advice comment will be greatly appreciated.

Jean,

I am so sorry you are having such a hard time. What you are chewing will not turn like water but it will chew to a liquidy feeling that you should feel comfortable swallowing. Are you doing puddings, eggs, grits, yogurt, milkshakes, soups, etc.? Once you can do those and feel comfortable then try things. Just take very small bites and chew, chew, chew. No one can really tell you what to try as you know yourself and how you are feeling. My first try at soft foods was lasagna from Olive Garden and I did well with that so I began to just try things. With this recovery it is just trial and error. If you start chewing and it does not get liquidy then spit it in a napkin. I will be praying for you!

I know that I have to try but it is so hard. I cannot seem to get

it down.  Tried small amount of chicken with mayo and small amount

of carrots but it did not work.

I am really worried.

Hi Jean,

Ryobe has given you exactly the right advice.  When I say "chew to a liquid" it is not like water, but rather, creamy and easy to swallow.  Try not to worry...it will only make it more difficult.  Figure out what works and stick with it. 

The document at this URL gives you a list of the foods you should be eating...it's entitled "Mushy Diet", which is soft foods.  Please test out the foods recommended there:

Have you discussed your difficulties with a doctor?  If not, I think you should.  If you have to make an appointment and go in to your PCP or GI doc, please do.

Hello

Still feeling terrible and no solid foods. Try chewing chewing

and now seems my jaw left side is poping. not good for sure.

What a delemia I am having now. One thing after another is going

wrong and I still cannot eat.  It has been too long.  Liquids are ok

Sorry to dump on you all but this surgery was not for me. I wished

I had done more research before jumping in.

Recently I asked you if you've discussed these issues with your doctor?  If things are as bad as you are saying regarding eating, you need to have some intervention by a doctor or nutritionist. 

This recovery is challenging, but things to improve. 

Please let me know if you've sought medical attention and if so what the outcome was.

I had my wrap on dec22 also a para esophageal hernia wrap. I still can't eatI got so teed of soft cause that means sweet, and I can't take anymore sweet.the cheese dishes and so many milk products gave me unbearable gas, so today I have had 2 cups of broth and some jello. Eventually you get used to being hungry, as sad as that is. At least your pain is mild. Mine is 5 or 6/10 most of the time. I am out of pain meds so I have to take baby tylenol. It is effective if I don't move.good luck with your recovery.
