Hi All. I am a new subscriber to this site for I too have just experienced my first attack of esophageal spasms with reflux. I am a 47 year old female and thought I too was going to be strangled by this abrupt attack that occurred 2am in the morning. My symptoms did happen after a large meal late at night after coming home from work ravenous. I awakened with extreme burning pain in my upper chest and gastric area. The more anxious I got b/c I thought I was going to choke to death the worse the spasming and burning got. Now 3 days later I also am experiencing that feeling of also having a ping pong ball in my throat that keeps going up and down my esophagus with or without food. 3 Days!!!! I can feel every morsel of food going down and it hurts!!!...Needless to say I need a GI!...Going today and will up date you all on the diagnosis and treatment. Thank you all for your input and comments on this illness. I hope we can find a cure otherwise it is going to be a long road for me too!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Scarm --
I know you're feeling very anxious right now. I, of course, can't diagnose what's happening with you, and it's very good that you are seeing a doctor. However, from what you've described it doesn't sound as if you are experiencing esophageal spasms. I think it's more likely you have something called "globus sensation." Common reflux symptom.

Thank you BCfromfl for your thoughts on my issue. The GI will be doing a endoscopy this Tuesday to see what is going on. He is just concerned about the acuteness of the episode however thinks there is spasmsing going on. He is treating me right now with Carafate 4x a day and Prilosec 40mg everyday To everyone with any of the above symptoms or similar ones stay tuned..............until next Tuesday for a diagnosis, treatment and prognosis on this given issue.

This is a common reflux symptom. From what I was told by my GI, the esophagus, a muscle, experiences spasms in relation to the reflux. Chew non mint gum between and after meals, this helps not only with anxiety but saliva is alkaline and will coat teh esophagus and the stomache. Have you changed your diet? That has helped me. I almost never have heartburn but this globus feeling in my thorat comes and goes through the day. Drink a lot of water also.
