Hi all,

I have the motility test coming up and was wondering what to expect. Could someone who's had it let me know what's involved?

Okay, here it the bare naked truth of the test....
1. They put numbing gel into your nose and sometimes your throat.
2. They give you a cup of water and a straw and as you to sip as they insert a small tube with sensors into your nose. The swallowing helps it go down.
3. If you have a easy gag reflex you will feel gaggy but you won't throw up.
4. When they reach your LES they will have you lay down slightly and adjust the probe.
5. They will ask you to swallow 10 perfect swallows of water. Try not to fight the tube. Also try not to swallow off cue. It just makes it worse feeling and takes longer to do.
Do not talk during the measurements either.
6. They will take the probe out when done and let you rest a little. If everything goes smoothly you'll be done in less than 30 mins.

It's not a pleasant test but it's very necessary to determine if you have any motility problems.

Hi Grace I am doing well. A lot better than I was when I spoke to you. I am not completely 100 percent back to normal. I am not quite sure you ever get there again. I am about 95 percent back to normal. I just had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy a month ago. I am going for results on Monday. Wish me luck. I will let you know the results. Do you mind if I ask who is the surgeon you went with. A girlfriend of mine just had the surgery about six weeks ago and she has absolutely no heartburn. She had terrible heartburn even if she drank water she would be sick. Today she is eating any and everything.

As for the motility test I couldn't do it. I wish I had sufferred it through. I had it removed after 20 minutes. In Canada it's a tube down your stomach for 24 hours. Please do it. It will determine what kind of surgery you will have.

Hi Grace,

It's definitely a challenging test, but I've had it 3 times and I'm still here!  I'd have it again tomorrow if I needed it.

Bill, our moderator and professional GI test-taker suggests sticking your tongue out and holding it between your teeth in between swallows to avoid extra swallows.  You're supposed to swallow only on cue.  Those extra swallows make the test take longer.

You'll do just fine!

The test was brutal....an EGD is walk in the park compared to that.

I think they have a new way of doing it now in minutes compared to an hour in which I had to go through.

I believe it determines if you have any swallowing issues and can determine what kind of wrap you will get.

Hey guys I thought the motility test is the tube in your stomach for 24 hours. Am I wrong. That was the test I couldn't tolerate.

That is the pH test. An alternative to the wire pH test is the Bravo capsule.

Hey all,

Thanks for the information, the youtube video was really reassuring too. I won't be having the test for a while but I'd like to know what to expect so thanks for the quick answers.

i think motility test is called manometry.i have done it before my nissen was undone

Soliver, I'd like to know how you are doing?  I have thogught about you quite a bit.  Hope all is going well for you now.  I did have my moments where I wanted my surgery undone but that has passed after my 5th month.  January 31st will be a full year for me since I had my nissen.  I still have a few little quirks to iron out but in time I am sure things will resolve themselves.  I have an appointment to see my surgeon on January 30 for my result from an endoscopy.
