Stomach pain on Dexilant- anyone else

Hi! I have this tight, stomach pain on Dexilant that is relieved when sitting or lying down. When I stand up, my stomach hurts. It's not a sharp pain, but it feels like my upper stomach is very tight. I have been on it for a week.

I can't prove that they were related, but about a week or two after taking dexilant I started getting stomach pains and heartburn (started taking it for lpr with no heartburn). Turns out I now have gastritis. I want to get off the dexilant because it doesn't really seem to be helping my throat (my throat actually felt better before the ppi treatment) but my ENT wants me to finish the 3 month treatment. Sucks. I wish doctors would try more alternative treatments before throwing ppis at people.

I have the same kind of pain but never made the connection with the dexilant. Interesting. Been on it for a month now and stomach problems are much worse.

Thanks for responding. I am weening myself off of it and I will start on Prilosec OTC. I am going to inform my md about this. He started me on 60mg/day, but maybe that's too much. I may need to start on 30mg working my way up.

I got off ppi with zantac (h2blocker) otc. I could cut the pills as well to lower doses when I was weening off.

Low carb seems to help me. Alcohol really does a number on the stomach.

No, but so far its been the wonder drug for me. Not a 100% but its knocking a lot of it out. And I agree alcohol and for me anything carbonated does a number on the stomach

I had my best success with Dexilant- few symptoms- but for some reason never did well with Prevacid, Prilosec, or Protonix. Which seems odd given that Dexilant is basically a stronger variant of Prevacid. These things seem to impact all people differently and so you just have to experiment. Dexilant costs a lot and Prevacid, Prilosec, and Protonix seem they cause as many stomach pains as they cure, so I'm hoping to get off and stay off all of all PPIs with diet changes, including how I eat (not overeating and chewing my food more thoroughly- it makes a difference). First have to make it through the rebound process, though.

Hi everyone,

        So 4 months ago I was put on the 60 mg dexilant for stomach pain and the doctor told me to wait 30 minutes before eating anything after taking it because its important to take it on an empty stomach. The first two days I forgot his advice about taking it on an empty stomach and drank coffee before taking it. Well my stomach swelled up and my pain was much worse than before taking it. I decided on the third day to wait and take it 30 minutes before eating anything in the morning and it was amazing my pain was gone and it has worked ever since! Even though it says on the directions you can take it with food, I think you should at least try it without because sometimes that makes a difference with certain meds. Hope this helps!

I did well on Dexilant for about a month and then noticed all of my symptoms were worse. I quit taking it for now. Waiting on results from the endoscopy biopsy to talk to my GI Doc and see what is the best form of treatment plan now that we know I also have a hernia. rolleyes

My gastic ulcers and stomach/esphagus were heeled last year. I was on Zegerid 40 mg and it worked great. I was symptom free for almost a year.

Now I have LPR besides the lower GERD.

For the past four months I've been on Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix and Zegerid to no avail. My PCP put me on 60 mg Dexilant and I felt like a new person almost immediately. It is the only thing that has provided relief. I pray it continues.

These PPIs are strange!

My very last PPI was Dexilant (Kapidex) right before I had NF surgery. It was to tide me over till the surgery. It did help more than any other I'd ever taken but I got a big surprise while taking it.

I'd take it and within about a hour I'd get super anxious. I thought it was just me until I went to drugs.com and saw some of the side effects included abnormal dreams, anxiety, depression, insomnia, libido changes and too many others to list.

I also surfed onto a old thread from this site where other forum members said it had affected their anxiety levels.

So even before my surgery I stopped Dexilant because I knew it wasn't helping my pre-existing anxiety.

I'm not sure I would be able to tell if my anxiety is due to the Dexilant as I frequently have anxiety, especially health anxiety. Since starting the drug, I've felt mentally better and more in control of the anxiety. I also have had relief from LPR for the first time in months.

Strange how we are all human and yet our bodies react so differently. The older I get, the more weird reactions I get to meds. I dread to think in just a few years I'll be seventy! I guess I'll just go behind the barn and shoot myself! :o) Kidding of course.

It's been a great drug for me... I was on Prilosec OTC for the past 5 years... but in December, my acid reflux got MUCH worse, and doc put me on Dexilant, which works much better for me. No side effects after ~1 month, so far. Regarding the cost... our pharmacy told us to sign up for the 'advantage' promo they have going on right, and it's only $20/month! Much better than $131.

Dexilant works where Prilosec and Prevacid have failed miserably - leading my LPR to cause some unsavory damage to my voice box in the form of a lump that has been slowly healing over time. Been on the stuff since March 2011, 60mg daily, and no stomach pains here. Won't make it to next March though as I'm getting the NF done very early that month and won't need it (hopefully) anymore.

Out of curiosity... how long has everyone been on PPI's? It's frightening to read that these drugs are not intended for long-term use... I took Prilosec OTC for at least the past 4 years (Zantac for a good 2 years before that), and now been on Dexilant for nearly two months, and will likely take this for a long time...

When I started taking dexilant and switched from prevacid, I started experiencing frequent regurgitation (I have LPR) and pressure behind my breastbone, which is completely abnormal for me, though I don't remember experiencing any stomach pain. I guess everyone's body reacts differently to different medications.

I tried ranitidine,omeprazole, pantoprozole,nothing worked for my stomach pain and bloating.
Then my doctor put me on dexilant 60 mg. to be taken on empty stomach at least 45 min.
before breakfast. It worked fine for 30 days and problem started again. I quit all medicines and tried one fruit(a green but little soft pear or a mango or a cup full of strawberries,if you are diabetic,eat half the amount and other half 2-3 hrs. later) in the morning and a salad of Kale.spinach,broccoli,yogurt instead of dressing and all problems went away. Also try green beans,asparagus and brussels sprouts ,tomatoes and vinegar.
All above medicines create low magnesium,and low bile production. As a result causes bloating and high blood pressure. And if you continue,it will increase your LDL,will cause white poop and gout because proteins and fats are not getting digested.

Bear in mind,high blood pressure and heart disease can also cause bloating and most importantly
intestinal blockage like polyps can also cause bloating and high B.P. as was in my case.
