Ok, so those of us battling "LPR" or burning sensation in your mouth, throat, lips chapped, dental problems, etc. etc.....

I came across this thing called sjogren's....man it seems very similar to the problems I have. Everyone was quick to point GERD out.....but what if it something else? I'm not a doctor but we go to them to get better....and when we don't get better we start coming to forums and looking else where for answers.....i doubt that's what I have...I'll bring it up to my ENT....but it's something to think about.

I have always wondered if there is some sort of autoimmune influence associated with my LPR. I get IBS too, and its pretty unpleasant. Also have gastritis, although that rarely bothers me. I went to an eye doctor recently and was diagnosed with dry eyes after having some eye issues. The problem with autoimmune diseases is they are difficult to diagnose. Very little is known about them (much like LPR). Im not sure how much help your ENT would be in this area. May be a better question for your primary or a rhuemetologist.

Max, I assume you were diagnosed with GERD due to some test results?
I am not saying you don’t have Sjogrens as well, but if you have been tested "positive" for GERD then I guess there is a good chance you have GERD, no?

This may be a repeat of what someone else have said, but maybe you should lean back and relax to get your healing going. In two to three months’ time you can start evaluating the op. At this point in time your mouth, throat, esophagus, etc. have not had time recover yet

Hi Max,

My allergy/asthma doc tested me for Sjogrens and it came up negative.  If you think it is something you'd like to pursue, you could ask your PCP to order the blood test.  It's just one blood draw, so it's nothing difficult to diagnose.

I was tested positive for GERD based on PH Bravo Test with a score of 23.

My problems is that I feel that my lips are getting more chapped as days go on. I'm certain this is something to do with LPR/GERD.... Or I think so. I doubt its healing if its getting more chapped. I see an ENT this Saturday to evaluate what's going on....

It's funny how LPR all of a sudden shows up. I remember my stomach acting up one day and I took a PPI and all of a sudden the burn was in my mouth. I wonder if my LPR is related to my tonsillectomy. Since the throat is devoid on a tonsil maybe the acid finds it's way all the way to the mouth. Or maybe it is related to long term PPI use. Have any LPR persons out there have similar issues such as long term PPI then LPR or had a tonsillectomy in the past. Just a theory.

I did notice the burn in mouth started after I used ppis.

However I didn't use them that long, maybe several months at the most.

I don't think it's from ppis. But I'm not certain. I want to say its something to do with the LES. That's why we get the Nissen right. I'm going to start using some Chapstick to see if it helps with the lips. I'm seeing my ent this Saturday to get evaluated. First time post op. I'll let u know how that goes.

I want to schedule an appointment with my dentist too.

Maximus, Speaking as a person with an autoimmune disease (Lupus), if you think you have sjogrens ask your doctor to do a simple blood test- ANA.
Meanwhile go get you some Biotene mouth gel and use it regularly. It will moisturize your mouth very well.
I found out my GERD/LPR was caused by my Lupus.

Hi Max,

No...it's a specific titer (is that what it's called?) that they're looking for.  You'd have to have blood drawn specifically to look for it.  Typical bloodwork isn't likely to even be looking for that.  Of course if you had bloodwork and asked for that in addition to other tests, they could do it...Do you have a lot of dry mouth and dry eyes?

I don't have a dry mouth....my eyes sometimes would get itchy. But I don't believe I have a dry mouth. Its just irritated on one side...mainly the left.

Titre ...yes, very specific blood test and the condition causes dry eyes. I replied on another thread about trying essential fatty acids and zinc. If you find it difficult to swallow tablets still, you could look for Udo's oils which is a blend of omega 3, 6 and 9. Look up signs of essential fatty acid deficiency and see if you feel it fits.

Thanks Joy. I looked it up. It doesn't seem what I have but I'll bring it up with my ENT.

I'm hoping this is GERD/LPR and time will allow the wrap to function properly to relieve my symptoms.

I'm just about 1 month post op.
