Prednisone and acid reflux

In late 2005, I became ill with bronchitis and a sinus infection. It was so bad, that after the illness, I developed asthmatic symptoms and chronic throat irritation: globus, soreness, graveley voice, etc.

I struggled with this for 4 months, tried Advair, and finally went on a 5 day course of Prednisone.

ALL the symptoms went away, including the chronic throat irritation.

Nothing I had done before that worked.

So here is the question: were the throat problems from LPR? (I was never diagnosed, but my symptoms were classic LPR) If so, does Prednisone treat these symptoms?

Last year, I had a similar situation and went on a short course of steroids: throat symptoms cleared up for a month and then came back.

I always thought steroids made GERD/Reflux worse.

Your situation sounds strange. The fact that it would go away and come back like that. Hell, if a 5 day course of steroids would get rid of my LPR for 6 years, id be all over it.

I recently read an article that implied that the body's immune response to acid, and not the actual acid, is what causes the damage to our bodies with reflux. So if that is the case, than it would make sense that prednisone (which blocks the body's inflamatory response) would help.

That being said, i would think that your sore throat would just come back if it was reflux? Do you still have symtoms from your most recent flare?

I just googled it, and it seems that most people get heartburn when they take prednisone, not the other way around. So im not really sure whats going on there.

Chuck: yes, I'm still having symptoms (globus, mild throat irritation, cracking voice, mild wheezing off and on). I haven't been having any issues with heartburn or burning sensations at night, etc.

I'm taking Prilosec 40MG a day and Gaviscon 2-3 times a day. Nothing is working.

Been taking the meds for about 5 weeks now.

I have read that it may take up to 28 days to several months before the Prilosec is working at it's peak.  Every human body reacts differently to the medications - perhaps this is not the best choice for you.  Do talk with your Dr.

Unfortunately, LPR is a poorly understood disease. The recomended treatment is twice dialy PPIs, but even that often yields disapointing results. I took Dexilant for about 7 months, and at about 6 months I was pretty much symptom free with the exception of a mild sore throat in the mornings. Unfortunately it induced some pretty nasty IBS, so i had to stop. I am really hoping this new LINX treatment will be an effective option.

I had a very similar experience with Prednisone!

I had a nasty case of Bronchitis with Sinus Infection, recovered but still had asthmatic-like symptoms for months. A few months later, I was prescribed 3-days of Prednisone to treat some poison ivy, and it also cleared up my chronic throat irritation, constant throat clearing, etc...

Unfortunately my symptoms returned after about 2 months.

My symptoms also seem to get worse after large meals, which is another reason why it seems related to LPR.

Are you going to try to get another course of Prednisone to try and clear up your symptoms?

How did you originally go on the Prednisone, was it supposed to help your 'asthma'?
