How many people are trying to come off PPIs even though they don't have side effects? I am trying to come off PPIs to avoid long term side effects even though I don't have any side effects now. How many people actually see long term side effects?
Just curious.

I took PPIs for 2 years. It was off and on but mostly on. When I started on PPIs, it was to heal ulcers which it did do. Then it was for gastritis which I find more painful than ulcers.
I got a dx of osteoporosis last week. I didn't have this 2 years ago. I had a long discussion with my doctor. After reading in dept about the effect PPIs have on the absorption of calcium and D, I stopped cold turkey as my doctor advised.
The strangest thing happened when I stopped the PPI. My gastritis symptoms stopped after the second day. I was shocked!
Now that it's in 'remission' so to speak, I'm following a strict diet and hope to keep the gastritis in check by using herbs, vitamins, natural ingredients, etc.
I can't say going cold turkey is the way to go but it worked for me. I think most people here wouldn't suggest it either. I tried tapering off before and have to wonder if some inactive ingredients in various PPIs were making the gastritis worse.
Let us know how you're doing.
Good luck!
Blessings,

After my surgery I tapered off my PPIs. The surgeon told me I had benign polyps from the Nexium I had been taking for nearly ten years.

I have had osteoarthritis for 15 years and have been on Prilosec for about
5 years without any problems. The med works so I take the low dose and don't worry about
it. I take other meds that can do much more harm but my medical dx calls for the meds.
For me it is about the quality of my life. JMHO. To each his own when it comes to choosing to take or not take medications.
Kindly,
Kitt

I already have osteopenia, so I would be a likely candidate for the osteoporosis associated with long term ppi use. I have so far tapered down from 80mg Nexium to 20mg prilosec.

Kitt, I haven't read anything about an association between PPIs and osteoarthritis. Of course if we look long enough, we can always find something on everything! Ha!
The PPIs I took were much more potent than a low dose of Prilosec. Even then high doses didn't always work except in the case of my ulcers. They healed within four months.
It's my bones that have been affected by the PPIs. The rapid progression of thinning bones can't be attributed to anything other than the PPIs I took. I thought it was age but my doctors said no, it was just too rapid.
Of course doctors vary on opinions and we just have to trust our own otherwise we'd be pretty miserable always worrying and wondering if we are getting the treatment we need.
Blessings,

Osteoarthritis occurs on the surface of the joints, and osteoporosis features thinning of the inside part of the bone. They are separate processes, though it is not good to have both like I do.

I haven't stopped taking PPI's (I've been on them almost a year) but I would rather have the surgery than keep taking them. I live in Finland, where the lack of sunlight contributes to both depression and osteoporosis, so I really can't afford to miss out on any Calcium OR Vitamin D.
My doctor (who was cautioning me against being a vegan) told me that I wouldn't feel the effects of a low calcium diet now at 27 but that when I turned 50 or 60, I'd be sorry. I'm seeing a surgeon next week and we'll see where we go from there.

I hated Nexium felt cramping, indigestion constant aching in my stomachs...horrible sensation on my tongue. took for 3 months but couldnt wait to stop .. I just started reducing the dose until I just stopped taking it.and the interesting thing was that I had no further reflux. have just had attack first time in 3 years...using diet and plenrty of water. I am hoping to get under control so that I don't progress to PPis.

Hi,
I'd like to stop the PPIs too. Can you share how you made the transition... any dietary changes or interim medications or natural remedies to help smoothe the way? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi Kraft paper... There are a couple of books around that really help...FIT for Life, l< look up,gastric reflux on amazon> basic principles I use are. Food combining..... No starch with protein, lemon juice and water when get up...no fruit with other food... And usual basics no coffee or black tea.... Also used slippery elm and DGL.. I will do almost anything to stay off PPIs.. GOOD LUCK

Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me how you stopped taking the PPI? Did you do it gradually? And were you taking the slippery elm and DGL while you came off? Thanks!

Yes.. Couldn't tolerate it so first went to every third day...slippery elm in the mornings before eating... DGL for break through.... Then just lengthened the time before I next took a dose. Also believing that this would worki is essential ... (Fear under mines it for me )..every day I tell myself I'm getting better and better...try not to focus on it as well
Cheers
