Endoscopy next week! Nervous!

Hello.
i am scheduled for my first endoscopy in a week. i am nervous because i've never been put under, never even taken a pain pill, and mostly nervous that i will get bad news.
i am a 26 year old female with no health problems. i have had reflux and have been told i have a low-functioning gallbladder. my main sumptoms have been stomach and esophagus discomfort. My annual bloodwork came back squeaky clean but i still have this ugly feeling that they're going to find something bad. Any words of advice?

Hi there,

Welcome to Healing Well :) Firstly, don't be worried that they'll find something bad. You're a young healthy girl (I was also 26 when I had my endoscopy) and it's unlikely that they'll find something bad.

Also, I'm guessing that you're having general anesthesia (since you said about you've never been put under)? In that case, they'll start an IV and you'll go to sleep and wake up when everything is over. You won't feel or remember anything!

I also had an endoscopy and it wasn't bad at all. It all goes by so fast, one they put you out it will seem like a minute and you will be awake and soon after on your way home. Doctors do this procedure every day, you will be fine.

I had myself so worked up for no reason. It is over in a second. As for the results, it is better to know than not know

Actually, they told me it was a twilight drug cocktail, so i won't be totally out. i have never had any kind of sedative so i am just a little nervous. and i suppose everyone is nervous about the results but it is better to know and get it taken care of.

They usually offer what is called "conscious sedation" and most people have no memory of the scope. Some people have it done with a throat spray to numb the uncomfortable bit, and then watch proceedings on camera! Choose whichever you feel suits you best.

Afterwards you may be a bit groggy if you've had the drugs, so get them to repeat things and repeat back what you think they've told you. After my first one I was so stunned it was normal I think I asked them for the results about 3 times!!

I had nausea, mid sternal pain that moved around a bit, lots of burping and a constant false hunger sensation.

I had an endoscopy in January and it was my first time ever having anything like that or ever having anesthesia. It was a breeze. The nurse putting in my IV was very good and it picked a little more than when giving blood but nothing major. They then gave me the first injection that was to "relax you". The anesthetist said it gave you the feeling of "having a glass of wine" and he was right. The doctor came in and asked if he could talk to the person, my Mom, who came with me after. I said yes. You have to have a driver because they won't release you to drive since you had anesthesia.

Then the nurse told me to "roll on my left side". I don't remember anything else til waking up in recovery. I did not have any pain or sore throat. After a half hour, they gave me water to drink and after an hour I left.

I had an endoscopy back in 2006 and it was no problem at all (except paying for it lol). No discomfort - I was asleep and had no ill effects when I woke up. Did find out I had EE and steroids cleared it up pretty fast.

I've had so many EGDs I lost count. No big deal, a couple injections in the IV and you're out. Next thing you know they are calling your name and telling you it's all done.

Wow! Reading all of you guys have anastheisa before endoscopy, here in Sweden they keep us awake and that is no walk in the park I´ll tell you.

Having my 4 endoscopy done this tuesday, not looking forward to it. And to top it of, PH-test the day after.... A 6 months follow up since Nissen.
