This morning I got the date for my surgery - May 15th!

Now that the date is final and the surgery is sooo soon shocked I really wonder if it is worth going through with it! Of course, I know that I have to but it won't be fun at all! I have not had all of the bad symptoms that so many of you have had. But, with Barret's Esophagus, the doctor said that I have no choice about needing surgery.

I thought that I would receive a phone call, and I did, but also appointments with a pre op nurse and an appointment with the anesthetist prior to surgery.

My husband is just 6 weeks into recovery from a badly broken ankle - and now he will need to take care of me in just a couple of weeks!

We will see how it goes!!!

Good luck with your surgery! I don't think you will be as immobile as your husband post-surgery. I was able to move and feed the cats and take care of myself the day after I got home.

"Taking care of you" involves watching what you eat and all that stuff.

I'm new here but from what I can see, everyone is here to support and encourage you!

Thanks for the reply! It is reassuring to hear that you were up and functioning by the time you got home from hospital. I had posted a few questions in an earlier attempt to post on this board but I don't think they arrived here!

I am wondering when I will be able to resume caring for my two year old grand daughter i.e. changing diapers and lifting her (28 lbs). Any ideas?

By reading these boards I think I am up to date on diet restrictions and really appreciate having the boards here for reference!

id say 4-6 weeks before lifting anything heavier than 2 stone.

I nearly backed out the surgery i had several times but went through with it in the end. Whilst surgery may not be right option for everyone, i had the surgery and i am glad i did it. Currently in week 4 post-op.

You often hear a lot of horror stories but i believe people are more inclined to post their experiences and find support if they were bad, rather than having a "perfect" recovery.

Mines gone well and i did a diary on here anyway as it was my way of dealing with the difficult situation and getting out any frustrations i had etc.

I had already read part of your blog and have book marked it on my computer so I can go back to read it again after surgery. So much good information there!!

This afternoon I saw my family doctor to get refills on prescriptions and to let him know my surgery has been booked. He said that I will stay in hospital at least one night and maybe up to a week depending on what they find and how well my initial recovery goes. He said that the day after surgery, I will have a barium X ray to see how well food (ie barium) is going down. If I can eat what they give me without it feeling "stuck" or hurting when I swallow, then I can probably go home that afternoon. If any concerns, then I will need to stay in hospital for a couple more days. He doesn't yet know if I can quit taking Nexium after surgery. It will depend on how I feel and how my follow up with the surgeon goes. So far, everything sounds very reasonable.

Also, my doctor said that I can resume baby sitting in 4 to 6 weeks.
