My hubby and I are scheduled for a 20th anniversary trip to Cancun in August. I am scheduled for the Nissen this Thursday. I was told I would be fine by then, but after reading posts am a little nervous. Should I reschedule my surgery until we get back?
Personally, if I had been in your situation, the question I would have been asking would be whether I should reschedule my trip, not my surgery.
It sounds like you aren't feeling a lot of discomfort from your GERD. In my case, my GERD was so bad that I would have done just about
anything to have the surgery earlier. In fact, I was begging my surgeon to move my date up. I cried at the emergency room and when my GI asked me just prior to getting my endoscopy performed, whether I was aspirating reflux at night, I replied, "Only nights when I sleep." He replied by asking, "Don't you sleep every night?" to which I realized that I wasn't joking, it had just come out. "No, I only sleep about
once a week."
I am about
as far along now as you will be when your trip comes, and from my one personal experience, I would have no trouble enjoying a vacation to Cancun at all. I am feeling almost entirely healed, with just minor gas discomfort. I am able to eat any kind of food I wish, although I have learned to chew more thoroughly than before. I have been off my PPI's for one full week now, and I have not experienced any significant heartburn.
However, I should point out that other than my volume reflux and GERD, I was and am generally in good health and in my early 40s. Your recovery may vary significantly, particularly if you have other health issues.
In my opinion, you should try to get your surgery done and over. Unless things go very badly, you should be able to enjoy your trip. I suspect you will enjoy it a lot more when you are 10 weeks into healing, than you would suffering with GERD for another 10 weeks and suffering on your trip, knowing that when you come home, you have this big surgery to look forward to.
for my 2cents, I'd get it over and done with. Worst comes to worst, and you don't go on your trip, at least you will be well along on the healing journey. And most likely, you'll already be past the rough spots and back to being able to enjoy life.
Good luck!
