Prilosec and joint pain

The American Drugs.com site, using FDA data reports that joint pain affected less than 1% of patients taking omeprazole .  However, they point out that the relationship between joint pain and omeprazole is not clear.

I would check with your Dr.  Do you have any history of arthritis ?

On May 25, 2010, the FDA announced that the labeling for Nexium and other proton pump inhibitors was being modified to include information about their association with broken bones. The agency said a half-dozen studies indicated that patients older than 50 faced an increased risk of fractures when the drugs were used between one and 12 years.

Sara,  I agree you should check in with your Dr. re your concern.

I got these joint pains within 2 weeks of taking prilosec (and other PPIs) 40mg/twice a day. I tried reducing the dosage to 20mg but it didn't help either. I first experienced tingling over my body in the muscles and nerves .. and then it was followed with severe joint pain.

I am therefore one of those unlucky ones to have LPR ... but can not take the PPIs!!

If that test you took didnt check for calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin b6, b12 check those. These can also give you an indication of what you might have. Just a thought, and I hope you are ok and you get better

nurses hear from patients often of joint and bone pain from patients, primary care also. GI specialists try to reassure that the omaprozol is not the cause. I know there is a relationship from frequent controlled experiments of my own. It's not clear that the joint pain results in arthritis.

i eliminated all gluten from my diet on three different occassions to see what would happen. my stomach problems, GERD included, were greatly reduced, most notably constipation. Sticking to it is difficult. When I 'fall off the wagon', all the symptoms return.

inability to manage stress is the number one cause of my symptoms. folks think I'm cool as a cucumber and great under pressure, but i don't think my body agrees. i'm trying to learn to meditate. it seems most difficult for those of us with GERD.

this leads me to zanax use. chronic zanax use is associated with GERD. not clear why, but my GI doc asked how often I take zanax and i lied: i said only when necessary, and not often. He said, "good, chronic use causes all sorts of problems with GERD." it freaked me out, and i didn't want to tell him that i'd been taking .25 mg for several YEARs. I stopped taking it, and symptoms were reduced.

bottom line: acid reducers damage the stomach's ability to digest food. For the unlucky few of use who experience bone and joint pain, there's no proof that it leads to arthritis, but it hurts and limits activity. Diet and poor stress management seem to be the most powerful underlying causes. They are within our control, however require terrific discipline.

Me too, hand pain building up in 4th year at 20mg. Then, increased to 40 Mg and severe hand pain. Reduced to 20mg w/0 consulting docs (who say they never heard of such hand pain), and 80-90pct better.

I have been on Protonix, then Nexium, and now prolosec for the past two years. (almost 20 years of all combined). A year ago I started getting lumbar compression fractures. I was doing everything right, eating healthy, exercising, losing weight, lifting weights, taking calcium and vit D, fishoil. etc. The only thing we can contribute the bone fractures to is the taking of PPI's for so long.
