Hi all,

Been reading through your forums and feel quite guilty for complaining against what some of you go through, it puts things into perspective, but I can only feel my pain so I come to you for help ...

about 3 years ago I started getting strange feelings in my chest, they would stop me in my tracks but I couldn't put my finger on where or what was happening.

Slowly this built to quite strong pain across my chest and down my arm and had me in A&E thinking it was my heart.

Since then I've had blood tests, x-rays, heart tests, kidney scans, barium swallow and the camera, the swallow showed some reflux, but they passed me over to a specialist after giving me Nexium.

The Nexium (after serveral other drugs) seems to help a bit, I still get the odd attack but in general its manageable.

Symptom wise, I get pains all over, including at the base of my ribs that stops me taking deep breathes.

Ok to my question, I have the 24 hour test on Thursday, the tube into my pipe to test the reflux and I wonder what comes next ? what if they find something ? what if they don't ?

At the moment I'm off all drugs as per the hospitals instructions and I have a tight feeling in the middle of my chest, it makes me feel really down, as I worry it will stop me taking breathes and I guess I'm worried it will kill me ?? I know that sounds stupid.

I also suffer from IBS, which is a daily task, although I manage this.

Sorry for the long post, I'm just a bit of a mess at the moment and hoped someone could relate and help me.

I also suffer with the pains by the ribs. It could b e related to the IBS and the reflux from what I have researched. I am not sure if they are gas pains or something different related to the nerves. After the PH test, they should do a Mamotry Test which will test the function of your Lower Esophageal muscle. Have you changed your diet?

I have suffered with GERD and IBS for what seems like my lifetime now.
I get the sensation of a weight on my chest and have learned that some of these pains can be related to gas. I once had an X-ray that showed the free floating gas in my chest and abdomen. Doctor was sure it was part of the reason for my pain and discomfort. I started taking gas x (simethicone) daily and found some relief.
I recently had the fundoplication for my GERD and have found that the gas issue has intensified. Again, I walk, exercise and be sure to take the meds as directed. I do watch my diet still but I can eat things now I haven't been able to eat for years. I understand your suffering but continue to take the steps in diagnosis! The Test your speaking of is the 24 hour ph test? Its fairly simple! It will give the doctor some ideas of whats going on and send you in the next direction! Watch your intake of gassy foods, caffiene, carbonated beverages and acidic foods as much as possible. Not a complete solution but I found it helped me during the time that I had to wait things out!

Thank you, I don't touch fizzy drink, sugar, caffeine, alcohol anything spicy.. Basically anything that tastes nice ...

IBS and chest kickoff so easily.

I keep fit, cycling and gym, but I have to hold back as it sets my chest off sometimes.

I'll keep on with the doctors, but I really hope they can give me something to fix it. I assume taking nexus forever isn't an option?

I am on a gluten free, dairy free, low acid, low fat diet. I watch my carb intake as well, except for potatoes. chewing gum, papaya enzymes, ginger, magnesium and other vitamins have helped. Drink a lot of water as well.

I hate the taste of water and I think adding fruit juice has been a problem. It's on the summer fruits stuff, but I guess it's acidic.

I don't touch, gluten or dairy and have always stayed away from fatty foods. Chewing gun seems to make my IBS kick off more ..

Had three apples yesterday (I was hungry) and last night my IBS went crazy.

Hi pimmo2000,

You'll do just fine with the test.  The worst part is being without meds...once you get the probe in place it's annoying when you swallow, but not all that bad.  On the bright side, it will help sort out what's going on with you, and hopefully get you moving in the right direction!

What a horrible test, the nurse said I was emotionless, the best patient ever, but that comes with hiding panic having had IBS for so long .. I really didn't enjoy it, no pain (a bit trying to get it up my nose, one side hurt the other side was fine)

I have the ph monitor in place and it's annoying at the back of my throat, but it doesn't hurt, takes about an hour to get used to it. When I eat the food tugs on the tube and makes my nose feel odd, but again not painful, just uncomfortable.

Just hope I don't rip the thing out in my sleep.

No I don't think its all in your head. Mine started with chest pain as well then got worse after being diagnosed with hpylori and treating it biggest mistak according to my new gi doctor, then all of a sudden I started having burning in my throat and post nasal drip and so on and they do make you think its in your head and don't do much for you. I think mine is more LPR than Gerd but I have learned a lot from this forum. Everyone on here is wonderful. Go thru and read some stories you will find some comfort, ask questions as well
