I am 3 days post surgery for my hiatal hernia and reflux surgery, plus removal of my gall bladder and release of abdominal adhesions. So far things are going fine and I'm expecting that to continue. I ended up staying in the hospital an extra day because my gas was not moving and consequently my pain levels couldn't be managed. Walking got things moving and that first "poop" was (almost) pure bliss!
I learned something in the hospital that I'd never known before and wanted to share it with as many people as possible. The first time the nurse tried to get me to stand up I had a wave a nausea sweep over me, followed by a sense of panic that all was about
to become undone! She took out an alcohol wipe (the kind you swipe over your skin before getting an injection) and held it under my nose. The nausea disappeared almost instantly.
She put a supply of wipes on my bedside table and I made good use of them every time I even thought I might become nauseated - they controlled the nausea completely. Now that I'm home, I have a bottle of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol on my bed table for "just in case". Even though I've not needed it, the peace of mind alone is worth it!
I was so happy to find this forum - most of the others I've seen are full of negative results, and I fully believe that the majority of patients experience success. I hope my nurse's "quick fix" helps someone else. I also appreciate the caution about
day 5 swelling of the wrap - my surgeon has not mentioned that to me!
(I added a bit to your title for members to know this isn't just the normal nausea thread)
