As of today, there is no cure (besides surgery) for GERD, only treatments. Avoiding certain foods does help with the acid production however there will always be acid reflux no matter what you eat. The problem is the esophaegal sphincter muscle does not work properly so it allows the acid to flow up into the esophagus and the overproduction of the stomach acids itself.
I have not tried it myself however I have heard that ginger is a good relief. I started aloe vera juice which I buy at a local health food store which I originally bought to help with my IBS but found out after I bought it that it does wonders on my reflux as well and it helps with my throat pain. It is not easy to drink and I have to hold my nose and chase it with something else but I have noticed an improvement.
I was on Nexium for a short while however it didn't help me and I had really bad nausea with it. I am on Prevacid 30 mg/day and I have not had any problems with it and it does seem to help me.
Good luck with your appointment and keep us posted!
