Help!!!!!!

Tonight I am suffering from the worse case of esophageal spasms.

Okay you old timers....

Give me some ideas...

I've tried these:

tums

pepto

baking soda

yogurt

pain killer

Nothing is helping.... smhair

I am wondering if Benadryl 25mg would help? Benadryl does calm and slow things down in the GI track by preventing histamine-mediate response particularly those of the bronchial tubes , GI track, uterus and blood vessels. It effects the GI track so it may slow down esohageal spasms. Hope fully you can get over that soon . No fun.

Joy, I am so happy the Benadryl helped last night. US Night owl Gerdie Troopers have to stick together as night time can be the worst. I will be checking in again tonight when I get home from my work on my Gerdie Troopers as I am working the PM late shift tonight.

It's the first spasms I've had in 2 years. I had the surgery 3 years ago and didn't have them before the surgery, but been hit with them 3 times since.

Do you take a PPI? I cured my esophageal spasms by taking magnesium which is low due to my taking Prevacid. Try a magnesium citrate or glycinate supplement and see if that does the trick. Do you get eye tics, muscle twitches or cramps or skipped heartbeats? Those could be helped by magnesium too.

No I don't take a PPI anymore. I can't take magnesium due to kidney issues.
I'm thinking it was a side effect of an allergic response to some candy I was eating last night.

Talk to your GI doc about this. They use a few rtpe of heart meds that pretty much stops them in their tracks. I was having them at the hospital after they fixed my esophagus.

Maybe you can get a script to have on hand kinds like out anti nausea meds, LOL!

Glad the benedryl worked. I will keep that in my back pocket list of cured....Thanks 'Tater

I'm thinking the candy was the culprit. I was eating a new chewy type fruit candy when I started hurting. It stopped after the benadryl. Today I ate two pieces of the same candy and immediately starting hurting again. So I put two and two together....

Ugh, I used to get these and they are a nightmare. I also used magnesium but I see you are unable to use that. Just be careful, use the benedryl if you need.

I've accidentally learned that Benadryl works a charm on my Esophageal Spasms. I've been suffering from them for 34 years; they get better and worse over time. Sometimes I go 2 years without having one, but there was a 10 year period from my early 20's into my 30's where I was on a HOST of drugs to keep them at bay. I have been diagnosed with GERD, Gastroparesis and IBS. Went to Johns Hopkins and they told me it was psychological.

HOWEVER, recently my spasms have been accompanied by hives. Horrible, drive me out of my mind hives. I have been taking 2 Benadryl when they kick in, and found that along with the hives, the spasms disappear! It's a MIRACLE! No more ER visits because I am in such pain I am crying!

Lastly, my husband and I started a vegetarian (nearly vegan) diet. Not because we wanted to but because my parents were visiting for 3 weeks and my father has decided to go vegan. I didn't have meat for 3 weeks, and the hives and spasms went away. I broke down and had a "wreck" sandwich today at Potbelly, and the hives and spasms started in this evening. So I guess the answer for me is no meat. 😕
